The period products are then collected by Share the Dignity and distributed to local services supporting people in need. Period products are needed by anyone who has a period, but they carry a financial cost. Some people have to choose between the cost of feeding their family or purchasing period products. Some people in abusive relationships are denied access to period products or the funds to purchase them as a means of control, preventing them from working or attending school. For those experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic or family violence period products may not be available. By participating in the Dignity Drive, Townsville residents not only support those in need but also start conversations about periods, breaking down the stigma and shame felt by so many.
