THERE is great excitement entering the WAFL season on a number of fronts with West Perth looking to go back-to-back, Claremont and East Fremantle trying to take that next step, and the rest all trying to make that leap to put themselves in the mix. On the back of a hugely successful season with such an even competition, high quality football and capped off with a Grand Final for the ages with West Perth winning a premiership at their spiritual home in front of a huge crowd, the WAFL will look for further growth in There's plenty of fascination around the season too and not only with the top teams from Can South Fremantle overcame starting from behind, will Peel Thunder be a force, are Swan Districts able to pull off redemption, will Subiaco be a force again, what can Peter German do with Perth, and are East Perth and West Coast capable of rapid improvement. West Perth are reigning premiers with no reason to suggest the Falcons can't make a crack at going back-to-back with the majority of their core group back while Claremont will again look to put themselves in the mix for that first premiership since Peel Thunder made an impressive charge into the finals last season before knocking out South Fremantle and then just falling short of Claremont in the first semi-final. There's every reason to expect another strong season again from the Thunder with the additions of Victorian youngsters Matt Payne and Aidan Hare along with welcoming back Brady Grey and the graduating colts premiership class. It is going to be a fascinating season on a number of fronts at South Fremantle with the Bulldogs attempting to reach the finals for an eighth consecutive season. Swan Districts is looking for a season of redemption in as well after being disappointed to miss out on finals last year. Subiaco had been the dominant WAFL team winning five premierships in eight years up to the end of , but after missing the finals for just the second occasion in the last nine seasons, the Lions are another team primed to hit back in

It was in the middle of the third quarter on Saturday at Dalkeith Oval and the ball went through the hands of three emerging North Beach players. There was an expectation the Beach would win, but it was more about how that victory might be achieved. And the performances of those three players, in addition to Lachlan Scurria, Dylan Brockbernd and Matt Murray was as much a reason to be excited as a convincing point win. All played their role in a victory that was never in doubt, the verve and energy of the Beach — combined with a significant dose of class — saw the ladder leaders maintain their unbeaten record with a A perfectionist might have wanted a bigger margin, more commensurate with the dominance in play, but that would be greedy. It was a similar tale in the Lifenet A-Reserves who coasted to a similar victory — Players were thrust into varying roles, but experienced players like Dion Cownie, Tim Edwards and Beau Witheridge through the midfield, Liam Catalfamo across half-back and Nathan Adler and Ben Johnson up forward caused all manner of angst for the Blues. To be fair, it would be possible to go through the entire team list and suggest each of the North Beach players contributed in a game that was one-sided. The Plasterwise Phil Scott Colts were expected to confront the biggest challenge and that proved the case as they were out-played by Collegians, particularly in the first half.
