During the first season, Shane acted as the leader to the Atlanta group survivors, a position he clearly enjoyed and carried out strongly until Rick's arrival; he then became the second-in-command through out the rest of the first and second seasons, much to his apparent dismay. During his incursions with Lori, he developed a strong obsession with her and was never able to get his head around the fact that Lori left him for Rick, who was thought to be dead when he and Lori had their sexual encounters. He believed himself to be a more deserving man for Lori than Rick, and was determined to fight to keep her and Carl safe at all costs. Shane also showed his potential as a father during Rick's absence and developed an admiration for Carl and treated him as his own son.

The pair served as King County Sheriff Deputies, a job that would see Rick shot and hospitalized, where he remained unconscious. During the pilot episode of The Walking Dead , Shane appeared to be a concerned and loyal friend to Rick. While his intentions to protect them were good, his betrayal of his friend was inexcusable. This led to much dissension between the former best friends, and after a massive knockdown drag-out fight , Shane would set his plan into motion to kill his former friend. Shane would organize a search party for the missing prisoner Randall Michael Zegen , who Shane had already killed. He would pair up with Rick in the search, but Rick quickly realized that Shane had other plans. The two argue about who is the better man to take care of Lori and Carl, and refusing to pull his gun on Shane, Rick ends up stabbing him.

Dale's death also influences the character development of Carl Grimes who has shown increased maturity in confronting the reality of the death of people close to him and the consequences of his actions. This mental growth is displayed when he properly uses his gun to dispatch a zombified Shane and save his father's life. As creator Robert Kirkman describes: "That scene right there, Carl would never have had the strength to pull the trigger and save his father from Shane zombie if he hadn't had that ordeal with Dale and felt responsible for killing Dale because he wasn't able to shoot that zombie". Dale Horvath 's death has profoundly impacted the group cohesion.

Rick ridicules Shane for his actions, but Shane mocks Rick's failed diplomacy with Hershel, and criticizes his decision to continue the search for Sophia. The others seem to accept Shane's tale, but Shane proceeds to shave his head mostly to hide a patch of hair that Otis had ripped out after being shot. Shane counters that Randall could lead his people to the farm and accuses Rick of putting Lori and Carl in danger by sparing him.
