Surtur is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comicscommonly as an enemy of Thor. Based on the fire giant Surtr from Norse mythologyhe was adapted by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirbyserta thor, and first appeared in Journey into Mystery 97 October serta thor The character has appeared in several media adaptations of Thor.

Two years after the devastation of the Battle of Sokovia , Surtur had been informed that Thor had been searching across the Nine Realms for the Infinity Stones. Surtur then took the opportunity to take Thor as his hostage, locking him in a cage within Muspelheim. When he chose to speak with him, Surtur then had the chained-up Thor dropped from his cage down before Surtur's throne.

He then released Surtur in the Serpent's Dark Asgardtricking him.

Surtr is attested in the Poetic Edda , compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda , written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. Surtr has been the subject of place names and artistic depictions, and scholars have proposed theories regarding elements of Surtr's descriptions and his potential origins. No further detail is given about the fight between Surtr and Freyr in the poem. Third adds that Surtr has a flaming sword, and that "at the end of the world he will go and wage war and defeat all the gods and burn the whole world with fire". High says that "amid this turmoil the sky will open and from it will ride the sons of Muspell.

Thor: Ragnarok opens with Thor being held captive by Surtur, who he quickly defeats — but later on in the movie, Thor needed Surtur to best his sister, Hela. In over 10 years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has explored many places not only on Earth but in other planets and realms. One of the heroes who has taken viewers to other parts of the universe is Thor, who has explored some of the Nine Realms as well as different planets in his solo movies prior to Thor: Love and Thunder.
