Colleagues of a Melbourne father who died from COVID last month after his workplace became an exposure site, believe his death could have been avoided if the organisation took the virus, and the safety of its employees, more seriously. WorkSafe has confirmed it is looking into the death of Martin Blight, 46, after concerns were raised about unsafe practices at the Serco call centre at Mill Park in Melbourne's north. One Serco employee — who was working during the outbreak last month and wanted to remain anonymous — told the ABC the company did not take COVID prevention seriously. She said Mr Blight, who was a long-term Serco employee, had raised concerns about people eating at their desks and taking their masks off around him. She said that, if the company had isolated staff when it first became aware of the positive case, Mr Blight might not have caught the virus. The Australian Services Union had repeatedly warned the company about unsafe practices at work since the pandemic began, including a lack of social distancing and poor hygiene practices. A spokesperson for Serco said the company was aware of the WorkSafe investigation into its Mill Park site. Meanwhile, a former Serco employee who said she caught the virus while working at the Mill Park site during another outbreak in July last year, told the ABC she was scared to come to work and felt unsafe before she became infected. The employee, who had to have months off work to recover from the virus, said it did so much damage to her body that it gave her a heart murmur. She said that she had felt pressured to come back to work before she was physically capable, with managers rostering her on each week despite her being bedridden, which caused her so much stress she was put on anti-depressant medication. The WorkSafe inquiries into the call centre come as thousands of fully vaccinated Victorians contemplate a return to office environments when the state hits its 80 per cent double-dose target, expected on November 5. There have been at least five outbreaks across Serco's Essendon, Mill Park, Box Hill and Dandenong sites, with staff ordered to isolate at the Essendon Fields site as recently as last week. The call centre officially reported six cases from the July outbreak, however the ABC understands at least 50 staff were infected. Meanwhile, the former employee who had worked with Mr Blight, and referred to him as a friend, said she was not surprised there was another outbreak this year and claimed many team leaders still travelled between sites when they should not. His death is just horrific.
