In the new world of Krakoa, mutants of all stripes have put aside their difference for the betterment of their kind, including some of the X-Men 's greatest foes. A business-minded mutant with energy-absorbing powers, Shaw's ambitions have long set him at odds with the Children of the Atom. A leader, a villain, and a father, Sebastian Shaw is one of the X-Men's more complex rogues. Marvel's Hellfire Club may appear at first nothing more than an exclusive club for the rich, but its Inner Circle comprises devious, ambitious people of privilege who seek power over Earth. Sebastian Shaw has historically been the Inner Circle's Black King, one of the highest ranks in the chess-based hierarchy. Shaw has alternately used his power to both aid and confound the X-Men, rarely letting his identity as a mutant figure into his decisions. Shaw defeated Colossus and Storm on his own, but was defeated himself when Cyclops blasted the floor out from under him.

Despite the nominal mission statement of the mutant nation of Krakoa, various figures across the X-Men line of titles have been operating in secret towards selfish goals. This is especially true for Sebastian Shaw, who has spent the last few years trying and failing to assume more control over the future of Krakoa. But now, he's looking to outside sources for power. He may have even gained true immortality and in the process, be potentially giving over a major advantage of Krakoa to an Eternal figure. Sebastian Shaw spent most of his time in the Marvel Universe as a villainous threat to the X-Men, and a rival to their place in the world. Even when the Krakoa era gave him another shot at redemption, the promise of power enticed Shaw too much and saw him assassinate Kate Pryde in a bid to gain her corner of the Hellfire branch of Krakoa. This failed and ultimately got him punished in a brutal fashion. In the face of Judgment Day , it looks like Shaw has still only decided to play for himself, as most of Immortal X-Men 6 is focused on his internal thought process as he contends with the possibility that the world could end in just twenty-four hours.
