World of Warcraft has had many memorable antagonists, from the dreaded Lich King to the bloodthirsty Garrosh Hellscream. While these formidable opponents can last for many story arcs and expansions, few compare with the might of Sargeras, Lord of the Burning Legion. Sargeras and his Legion are essentially the main antagonists of the entire Warcraft saga, from the original RTS title all the way up to the Legion expansion of WoW. Yet you rarely face off against him directly, instead dealing with many of his powerful lieutenants, making you wonder just who is the one pulling the strings behind the Burning Legion. Sargeras is one of the Titans , the mightiest beings in the World of Warcraft universe. They are born inside planets , forming as world-souls inside them for eons until they emerge, mature and filled with purpose.

However, while he once served as a guardian and protector, he later set out to destroy all world-souls and life in the universe, and undo what the titans had strived for ages to achieve. His actions and their effects essentially made him one of the main antagonists — or as Chris Metzen called him, "the big, mega bad guy" — [7] of the Warcraft franchise, and he served as the main antagonist of Legion. Sargeras and the Pantheon in Chronicle Volume 1. Like all titans , Sargeras was born from a world-soul maturing within a planet in the Great Dark Beyond. He was the mightiest warrior of the titan Pantheon and originally possessed the title "The Defender" and was the "noblest of all". Sargeras continued defeating the disorganized and incompetent demons with ease, but he also soon discovered that some demons had begun wielding the dark energies of the Void. The Defender also suspected the existence of malevolent beings far more powerful than mere demons who sought to influence the physical universe hidden behind the veil of the Void. The presence of these beings troubled Sargeras, but he nonetheless continued his work. To his dismay, Sargeras soon discovered that the demons he had defeated simply returned to the Twisting Nether to be reborn in new bodies and continue to torment the worlds of the Great Dark.
The battle between the two raged until, in an explosion of fel and arcane power, both of the combatants' blades shattered, sargeras wow. It was only a matter of time before Sargeras and the Legion also took notice.
What goes through the mind of a creature so cosmically powerful that entire worlds are viewed as dust motes, their inhabitants mere specks in the vast expanse of the universe? Sargeras was once the Champion of the Pantheon, sworn to protect and defend the worlds the Titans put to order. Now, he leads one of the greatest threats Azeroth has ever seen — an army to end all armies, unending in its malevolence. But what brought him to this fate? He may be the greatest villain in the Warcraft franchise, but Sargeras is far from infallible. Long, long ago, Sargeras was born as any other Titan, from a fragile world-soul contained in one of the many worlds scattered across the Great Dark Beyond. And he was a mighty warrior — the best of anyone in the Pantheon, charged not with the ordering of worlds, but with defending them.
