Cores are essentially other programs and games that run through RetroArch. RetroArch requires cores to run any content.
RetroArch is one of my favorite programs to use for retro game emulation, because it can emulate many systems. But it does have quite a steep learning curve. This guide is meant to help you get set up with various RetroArch iterations. RetroArch really shines on retro systems, particularly PlayStation 1 and below games. For more modern consoles, it is often more efficient to rely on standalone emulators, which are generally more optimized than RetroArch. However, if you are using a system that relies primarily on RetroArch for emulation like Xbox , or you have a beefy PC that can run well regardless of optimizations, you may find success in emulating higher-end systems in RetroArch, too. RetroArch is a frontend for emulators, game engines and media players.

Among other things, it enables you to run classic games on a wide range of computers and consoles through its slick graphical interface. Settings are also unified so configuration is done once and for all. RetroArch has advanced features like shaders, netplay, rewinding, next-frame response times, runahead, machine translation, blind accessibility features, and more! On top of all that, there are various settings you can configure to optimize the results even more. RetroArch is a modular program that runs emulators and games within its framework as if they were 'plugins'. These plugins are called 'cores', and you need to install them inside RetroArch to be able to use them. Both Libretro and RetroArch were made by the same developers, and RetroArch serves to demonstrate Libretro's power and scope. On most platforms except game consoles and certain mobile platforms , RetroArch comes with dynamic module loading support. You don't need to download a new version of RetroArch in order to be able to run new or updated cores! Once a core is installed, you can load a core by going to the Main Menu and selecting 'Load Core'. Every core that has been installed already will be shown in a list.
