One user, posting on Reddit's thread for "data hoarders," claimed he's downloaded the bulk of SoundCloud's public archive, and that it's "only" TB. He posted in response to reports that SoundCloud only has funding to last it 50 days, and that users should back up their favourite tracks. SoundCloud has denied those reports, saying it's "here to stay. He posted a temporary GB log file to prove he did it, though due to the size Business Insider hasn't verified that file. Makemakemake didn't give precise technical details, but did reference using Google's cloud computing services, rather than a home connection. SoundCloud, meanwhile, is hosted on Amazon's cloud computing platform.

This seems a bit ridiculous. I wonder what their storage solution is like. Almost certainly Google Drive unlimited. Like every other Unlimited service, because people like this abuse the shit out of it then when it inevitably dies they run around exclaiming "dont blame me brah they said it was unlimited If you let people advertise 'unlimited' but they can't actually deliver, you end up with a kind of market for lemons situation. It devalues the products of people that aren't bullshitting you. Say with fake-unlimited the "real limit" is 4TB before they start terminating you, but a different provider provides 5TB of capacity. Because the former is allowed to outright lie, there is no way for the latter to effectively communicate that they are in fact offering a better product, instead they too have to make a bullshit "fake unlimited" claim to compete. Now because nobody has to actually back their claims with anything, they are infact massively incentivised to cut the "real storage" limits, because it will cut their costs, and they can still keep making the same claims. Its a market for lemons[1] race to the bottom, and everyone loses, producer and consumer because scamming liars cannot be reliably assessed beforehand. So consumers lose faith in the entire market segment, and providers offering actual legitimate services become unsustainable. It's like you go to a restaurant that offers unlimited refills and they don't allow you to keep refilling your cup while you're throwing the drinks onto the floor. False advertising!

In the community received significant public attention in the USA for its' ad-hoc participatory archiving project of digital information concerning the forced entry of right-wing demonstrators into the US Capitol building on January 6th. Reacting to the events users started downloading and scraping data from streaming platforms and social media before the content was deleted or made unavailable for the public.
Quick and dirty python script to scrape media content pictures, videos embedded in any links in Reddit thread comments. I wrote this on Jan 6th, , the day the US capitol was mobbed, to collect social media and livestream videos people posted to crowdsourced threads on Reddit. Uses the Reddit json API and uses you-get to download media. For every comment in each thread listed in config. It then uses you-get on each URL to pull any photos or videos we find on the site. When you run the script, it'll create a file, e. This is a newline-separated list of every URL pulled from all the threads from config. To specify reddit threads to scrape, add them to the array in config. As of this writing, it's set up to scrape a selection of megathreads posted after the US Capitol insurrection on January 6,

Today perhaps more than ever, data is ephemeral. Despite Stephen Hawking's late-in-life revelation that information can never truly be destroyed, it can absolutely disappear from public access without leaving a trace. Just as books go out of print, websites can drop offline, taking with them the wealth of knowledge, opinions, and facts they contain. You won't find the complete herb archives of old Deadspin on that site, for instance. And in an era where updates to stories or songs or short-form videos happen with the ease of a click, edits happen and often leave no indication of what came before. There is an entire generation of adults who are unaware that a certain firefight in the Mos Eisley Cantina was a cold-blooded murder , for instance. So on any given day, year-old Peter Hanrahan now spends his evenings bingeing on chart-topping radio shows from the s. A student from the North of England, he recently started collecting episodes of Top of the Pops —a British chart music show that ran between and —after seeing the Tarantino flick, O nce Upon a Time in Hollywood. It's been another way to discover music from that era.

American Airlines has lost a lot of money with the their unlimited travel pass and I'm not sure they could revoke all the subscriptions after they figure this out. Like every other Unlimited service, because people like this abuse the shit out of it then when it inevitably dies they run around exclaiming "dont blame me brah they said it was unlimited As far as I can tell, Google places no limits on business users, numerical or otherwise. While this is clearly abusing intent behind the "unlimited" sales pitch, I still do not think it's in violation of it. Web Archiving. Yeah, except people on DataHoarder encrypt their files so that the providers can't store one copy per unique file but have to store one copy per one file in any user's account. So consumers lose faith in the entire market segment, and providers offering actual legitimate services become unsustainable. You can bet that instead of repurchasing I simply bought a flash cart. Well then they shouldn't have called it unlimited. Content sharing. False advertising! It isn't clear why SoundCloud hasn't detected and blocked such activity through rate limiting.

People were using amazon cloud drive to host their entire plex library and were hammering the service every time plex did a library update. I do feel there's a difference between "all you can eat buffet" and "unlimited storage" or "lifetime warranties". Packages 0 No packages published. Content sharing. Go to file. SoundCloud has denied those reports, saying it's "here to stay. A lot of that is photos; I have relatively little video. The forum hosts discussions on many topics ranging from optimizing storage hardware, cloud storage platform guidelines, or backup software. Unfortunately the dispute processes are unreliable, so when it's time to backup a media project, I play it safe and encrypt. Well, companies should think twice before selling unlimited plans. ClassyJacket on July 17, root parent prev next [—] Well then they shouldn't have called it unlimited. This is why I so strongly prefer services that don't bullshit me. It symobilizes a website link url. I think you quite clearly know the difference between the two situations. If there was a policy that assured my non-shared files wouldn't be subject to these scans I would happily store content unencrypted.
