It's 3-section leg design allows the tripod to extend to a maximum height of Quick set-up and break-down is facilitated by easy-to-use twist locks, which require just a quarter rotation to unlock and re-lock each leg section.

I'm on a continuous search for what I consider to be the ultimate tripod. A tripod is one of the most important accessories in my kit — perhaps too important to be considered an "accessory". Not terribly long ago, Really Right Stuff, designer and manufacturer of some of the best-functioning and highest-quality camera accessories available, sold only Gitzo brand full size tripods. There is a narrow selection of tripods that compare to the Gitzos, especially the carbon fiber models and the Gitzo GTLS Systematic Tripod has been my "ultimate" choice for years. It performs amazingly and is unmatched by anything else I've tried I said "Not terribly long ago" because RRS now designs and produces a wide range of their own tripod models.

It is the the set of legs that most completely exemplifies the combination of stability, portability, build quality, and versatility that RRS has become known for in tripods. As such it has set the standard by which we compare all other tripods in the systematic category. Versatility is a big strong point of the RRS tripods in general. It is fairly easy to transform the TVC to a variety of tasks using the available accessories such as the fixed base, which converts the tripod in the TFC version, or the center column to add quick height adjustment. Given that swapping the base costs a fraction of buying an entire new tripod, it makes the most sense to consider these tripods to be the same model. Throughout the review, I will try to emphasize where the major differences would be. For the most part though, these tripods have nearly identical specifications and performance. I will mention the places in which the tripod has changed in the Mark II version, but the bulk of this review will apply equally well to both versions. This tripod was purchased through retail channels. I was not paid by any party to write this review, and the opinions are entirely my own. For full discussion of the stiffness and damping, see the test results page of the review. Most of the specifications are fairly self explanatory.

I finally broke down and bought a decent tripod. Actually, I did more than that. I bought the best tripod that I could find. Just as he predicted, I made them in order. At the time I bought those legs, I thought the pistol-grip ball head Manfrotto RC2 seemed pretty cool. At least it was cool until I tried to take my first panorama and realized there was no smooth way to pan with it. It also seemed awkward if I needed to tilt the camera up or down. The price made me step back a few times and it was a real pucker-factor decision when I finally ordered the gear. I was making a leap of faith. Fortunately, I landed on my feet.

A blend of robust design and versatility, it's a reliable choice for those seeking adaptability in their outdoor gear. After years of development, we are excited to present our Mark 2 Tripod line. Improved ergonomics make operating the tripod more comfortable and seamless. The Mark 2 Tripod legs are easier to adjust and hold up better to the elements. Redesigned twist-locks prevent grit and debris from contaminating the threads. We added a vent at the top of each leg to allow efficient air transfer when extending or collapsing, for rapid deployment, and takedown. For years I hemmed and hawed and put it off. It was too expensive. Too this too that. In the meantime I bought many different tripods and head.

It has the size and versatility of a full systematic while coming in at a weight that we expect to find in a smaller all-purpose style tripod. Not terribly long ago, Really Right Stuff, designer and manufacturer of some of the best-functioning and highest-quality camera accessories available, sold only Gitzo brand full size tripods. I don't remove my top plate, so for me, the RRS design is slightly better, though I wouldn't call this a decision factor for me. However, tripods are an item that many beginners upgrade over and over again until they reach the best available because, as they progress, they realize that the quality of the tripod matters. As expected, these tripods are aesthetically beautiful and they function incredibly well. Thus, I depend solely on the commissions received from you using the links on this site to make any purchase. With a range of RRS tripod models available, my first task was to select the model to evaluate and selecting one that had the most staying potential was my goal. The RRS leg angle adjustment friction is adjustable with a commonly-found hex key wrench while Gitzo uses a harder-to-find star-shaped wrench. While I like to evaluate new gear on such trips, with much at stake, I'm not willing to take a chance on an even slightly inferior product. The long model means longer individual leg sections which equate to slightly more retracted length, a much longer extended length, slightly more weight and a bit more cost.

I'm on a continuous search for what I consider to be the ultimate tripod. Shooting the night sky is one of those. Compared to many manufacturers, the contents of a Really Right Stuff tripod box are fairly sparse. Given that swapping the base costs a fraction of buying an entire new tripod, it makes the most sense to consider these tripods to be the same model. Usually ships in 4 - 6 working days. The RRS angle stops are a nicer design, though the Gitzo locks work fine. A tripod that dampens vibrations quickly and effectively means that I will get more sharp photos and am potentially able to shoot in less favorable conditions such as wind than otherwise possible.
