Director K. Kathirvelu's 'Raja Vamsam', which has an incredibly large star cast, is a family drama that exhausts the viewer by the time it ends. The plot revolves around Kannan Sasikumar , a team lead working at an IT firm in the city, and his large family of 44 members who live in their native place. The bond between all the family members is strong and the hero, we are told, is the apple of their eye. Finding a girl who meets the expectations of such a large family, however, proves to be a daunting task. Even as the family back home is busy bride hunting, Kannan is entrusted with the task of completing in three months a hard-won project worth Rs 5, crore.

But then, soon after, it is clear that this self-awareness was a one-off thing, and Raajavamsam prefers sticking to a tried and tested template that just ends up being tired and wasted. Director: Kathirvelu. Raajavamsam is basically a joint-family-glorification-PSA-meets-climate-change film. Do they beat any odds to remain the way they are? Are they a family that turns up against any social evil in their town? Are they really the strength of the hero when he faces a bunch of obstacles? Well… nope again. So… why are they exalted by the town? Anyway, the characters are so one-note and forgettable that despite the presence of seasoned actors like Thambi Ramaiah, Rekha, Nirosha, Singampuli, and Manobala, none, I repeat… none of the scenes leave an impact. Raajavamsam essentially becomes an assembly line of tropes being doled out one after the other. I particularly liked some of the subversions that are placed in the Nikki Galrani character arc, especially the interval sequence. Even some of the attempts at comic scenes between Nikki and Sasikumar work due to the earnestness of the actors. He does enough to avoid being bracketed as not fitting in an urban setting.

Rajavamsam moves on as a family drama which uses its first half to establish the characters in the film, and introduce us to the family, helping us understand the members. The film hops on with dollops of forced comedy and lots of messages on how to hold the family together and move ahead. The second half comes with some typecast villains and the same messages to the society, which feel like they have been pulled in from various films in the past. The film introduces many plot points within the first few minutes itself, just like the IT project that Sasikumar is about to carry out in his office, but within the next two hours, we realise that it has been put on the back burner with no attention given to it at all. Sasikumar plays a well-learned man from the city, but his characterisation is something is coming from the usuals.
