Historically bred as working dogs, terriers first appeared in the British Isles in the midth century, where they were bred to hunt rodents by burrowing underground. Later, during the 18th and 19th centuries, these early terriers were crossbred with a variety of hounds and bulldogs to increase their hunting skills,courage and size.

These high energy dogs would dig up underground dens and burrows while barking furiously, forcing the inhabitants out where hunters waited.
