En route to Las Vegas lies a s style Diner in the middle of the blazing hot Mojave desert. Sound random? Well, it certainly is. Could the whole thing be a mirage in the desert? Possibly, but that mirage certainly makes a good eggs Benedict. Pretty unique, but what really makes this spot amazing is the full dedication to the 50s aesthetic. You've got jukeboxes, malt machines, and classic posters adorning the walls; there are life sized figurines and retro waitresses scurrying about, all while Buddy Holly classics blast through the loudspeaker. As for food, all the classics are here: Malts, Sandwiches, french fries, burgers, fish fry, breakfast all day, etc. The menu is extensive, portions big and all is quite tasty. For some crazy but wonderful reason, all of this seems very fitting and cathartic in the hot desert heat. Maybe I got too much sun that day? Originally built in , the diner was your typical s style eatery, catering to motorists making their way through the desert. It was small— 3 booths and 9 counter stools— but managed to stick around for a while, despite being in one of the hottest places in the Country. Our Southern California road trip was about to continue. Our route followed the legendary Route 66 for a while which ends in California. Just to feel nostalgic, we got off the freeway and drove along Route 66 for a while. Someday it would be cool to drive the whole stretch across America. Barstow is about half way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, so many stop there on their drive. Right next to Barstow is Calico Ghost Town which we skipped this time, since it was already closed by 5 pm. Calico is fun but not very authentic.

After seeing the signs for Peggy Sue Diner for years on my drives to Las Vegas , I finally decided I should stop by and give it a chance. This exit is also where you can check out the Jenny Rose sign and even take a trip to Calico Ghost town if you feel so inclined. Here is all the information. It is set in the shadow of the Calico Mountains and was built from railroad ties and mortar from the nearby Union Pacific Railyard. It was reopened in with an attempt to restore and preserve it in its original state. The diner was the perfect place to display the owners extensive collection of movie and TV memorabilia. A movie ticket was 70 cents! They have many different rooms you can sit in as well.

We had passed this place on the way to Las Vegas from LA and I knew for sure that we were going to have to check it out on the way back! You can't miss the roadside signs that will direct you to it as Sprawling over many rooms that look like additions and are decorated with all kinds of great 's nostalgia, we found a table near the back where there's a neat little park filled with ducks and turtles. All the food was really tasty and the portions were really big. My only complaint was that we didn't see our server for quite a while after our food arrived and I really could've used a refill on the pop. After we ate we explored the rooms and the gift shop and even went outside to see the animals, but there was a windstorm outside that cut our visit short. Definitely check out this place if you find yourself in the desert - and come hungry because there's lots to eat! We've been passing this place up for years until our friend told us she loved the deep fried pickles.
