It cleans the surface so much better than any other cleaner and removes all buildup and oil. In this case, it may be soot and dust. Deglosser also etches the surface so that your paint sticks to it better. This means less chances of the paint chipping or scratching away when kids hit it with a train or car!

I just bought some Rustoleum high heat paint to cover up the cheap brass trim on my fireplace doors. I read a blog post just yesterday and they recommended using the regular paint with a foam brush. I'm experimenting with a brass doorknob plate in my garage. I've been meaning to do this for years. Thanks for the reminder I painted one in my family room with Rustoleum black high heat spray paint 8 years ago and it has held up beautifully. In my living room, I used the high heat paint in an ivory color to blend in with the marble surround. I have gas logs. I turned off the gas and covered and taped the firebox to prevent over spray on the logs.
