Ibro Cehic Updated on October 8, Kia and Hyundai have made big strides in terms of reliability and quality in the past two decades. However, given how relatively young the brand is, major defects can still happen. On a positive note, Kia company owns its mistakes and makes up for them. One such problem is the P fault code. If you get a P fault code in a gasoline engine Optima, it means the engine has just started knocking. Other causes include a faulty knock sensor, low fuel quality, worn-out rod bearings, or if the car has a diesel engine, a glow relay stuck on.

Today the check engine light started flashing after driving the vehicle for about 7 miles. The motor sounds like it has a knock knock sensor?? I checked the oil level and coolant level and both are good. It idles fine with no missing and shifts fine with no slipping. I pulled the code of P and that is the only code that is being displayed. Doing a general Google search shows several different possibilities for this code. Any ideas? I am definitely calling the dealership tomorrow to have them tow it back to their place to check it out but I am curious as to what this code may be.
If the light starts flashing again then the engine needs replacing at my cost.

P is a very common code to find in the Kia Sorento. It indicates that the Knock Sensor Detection System has detected excess engine vibration. An actual engine knock most commonly causes it, but a bad knock sensor or wiring problems are also common causes. Repairing P should be considered a high priority since it indicates your Sorento could be experiencing catastrophic engine damage. Note: The Sorento has an unlimited powertrain warranty due to this issue.

Additionally, we investigate the potential causes so you can get it fixed. The P is a manufacturer-specific code and only shows up in Kia and Hyundai vehicles. At first, you may only notice that the check engine light comes on when the P DTC is set. You may also notice that your car is in limp mode and the engine speed will be limited, and you will not be able to accelerate as fast as usual. The most common cause of the P code is a bad knock sensor or bad wiring to it. However, in many Kia and Hyundai vehicles, it can often be caused by a software error in the KSDS system, which needs to be updated. The problems causing the P trouble code can vary from major to minor. If caught early enough, you could avert permanent engine failure.
