When we learn, we usually do not fill a blank slate. We usually already bring experience with us in some way. It is important to combine the new knowledge with what we already have, to support the learning process. This way, we don't have to start from scratch and memorise everything every time we prepare for an exam. If we take advantage of this, learning becomes much more efficient. By the way, this is also how we compensate for our age. Younger people may still be fitter and better able to concentrate, but they don't have our wealth of experience. The older we get, the harder it is for us to concentrate and store new theoretical knowledge. Instead, we can draw on our past experiences and relate new things to old ones. Linking existing information with new information is extremely easy, you don't even need a mouse. In the past, I made my notes by hand, which I then either threw away or put in the archive after the exam. Not very sustainable. Later I tried various tools, including OneNote, cherrytree, vi. I collected a lot of information but didn't really work with them.

I write a lot of notes both in my job and in my personal life. I've tried a lot of different note taking applications over the years and more recently I've started using Obsidian Notes as my application of choice. The Obsidian app is a beautiful, FREE note taking application which allows you to create and store your notes locally in the Markdown file format. It allows you to link notes together and create a knowledge graph of information. Obsidian notes are stored locally as files on your computer rather than in the cloud. Obsidian has a text editor which allows you to add markdown formatting to your notes. It also has a preview mode which allows you to see how your notes will look when they are rendered as HTML. As a developer, Markdown is a format I write in regularly and this made the Obsidian app a perfect tool for me. While you can use the Obsidian app to edit your notes, markdown is a common format for software developers so you can also edit your notes using any text editor that supports the markdown format.
