The Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagospresents 1 Work, odun arts, a new project that invites an artist to present a single work as a odun arts of highlighting a specific trystlink, engaging a particular idea or creating an ambitious new work which may not be possible through other platforms or to simply use the space as a laboratory or studio that encourages a direct engagement with a diverse audience. The first 1 Work project is presented by Odun Orimolade, for whom drawing is a principal component of her artistic practice, as well as being central to her research interests, odun arts.

The works, intricate pencil and charcoal drawing installations, video, and performance, are described as a portal between the knowledge she consumes and the memories she has retained. Because knowledge can be memory and memory can work as knowledge. In universe-crafting and mark-making, Orimolade relies on her imagination as a source of valuable knowledge to replenish existing gaps. And in her new worlds, nothing is lost or missing and she invites her viewers to revel in this sentiment. Knowing is also an invitation to the public to journey through our collective subconsciousness to discover what has been and what could be.

Tunde Odunlade is a print and textile artist who has exhibited, taught, lectured, studied and traveled extensively within Nigeria and throughout Africa, North America, and Europe. In addition, he has performed as an actor with the Nigerian National Troop and various other theatrical organizations, and has recorded several CDs that integrate poetry and music. He lives in Ibadan, in the southwestern part of Nigeria. His art has been displayed in dozens of one-man and group shows. His work is also in the collections of many private individuals in the North America, Europe, and Nigeria. His favored technique for making prints is linocuts. His images draw on the rich history of Yoruba art and culture, modern-day life in Nigeria, and his passion for music. Tunde has always been deeply committed to expanding opportunities for other artists. He co-founded the Toki Memorial Arts Centre in Ibadan, where he served as artistic director for 14 years. This center became a major force in discovering and nurturing artists who have gone on to successful international careers. In addition, Tunde has devoted considerable energy toward improving conditions in Nigeria.

The project began in when I was invited to give a talk on the panel during their Post Studio conference. I used the opportunity to take one of their courses on Curatorial Practice led by Swedish curator Maria Lind. This extended stay led to conversations with director Hildegund Amanshauser on involving more emerging artists from Africa in the programme focusing on Nigeria. It also offers the public a discursive platform to engage the mutability of studio practice, the impact of international residencies on the local art sector as well as the benefits and at times the disadvantages of residencies. His objective was not to produce new work but to explore new ways of seeing, of learning and painting. Kelani took two things with him to Salzburg; a stamping machine and a local Ankara cloth.
