Beginning in early , thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country began to contract COVID during the worldwide pandemic. Due to the nature of their job, law enforcement officers were required to work and interact with the community even as the majority of the country was self-quarantined. Corrections agencies, in particular, suffered tremendous losses due to the constant close proximity between the corrections officers and large inmate populations. Since March , ODMP has verified that over law enforcement officers have died as the result of a confirmed or presumed exposure while on duty and continues to work with hundreds of other agencies that have suffered a COVID-related death. Originally signed into law in August , United States Public Law set a presumption that law enforcement officers who became ill with COVID contracted it in the line of duty unless proven otherwise. The law, which was extended in November by Public Law , also allocates financial benefits for the survivors of law enforcement officers who die as the result of a confirmed or presumed exposure while on duty. The hundreds of law enforcement officers honored below have been verified by ODMP as having died after experiencing a confirmed or presumed exposure to COVID while on duty. Yet we know that those in the fire service and those in law enforcement place their lives on the line to protect the people and property of our village and the surrounding area.
