It's been a long time since I blogged but I think it's fine time to get back into it and this seemed to be a useful start, ns outage map.

A common question following a large storm event is about our restoration priorities. We restore power in a specific order starting with any emergency safety concerns. Then we restore power to the substations and main power lines that bring electricity from power plants to our towns and cities. After that, we focus on critical services identified by the Emergency Management Office such as hospitals, police, fire, water and communications. Next, we repair power lines that will restore power to the greatest number of customers in the least amount of time, including high density buildings or neighbourhoods. Once these repairs are made, crews restore power to smaller groups of customers and individuals.

Thousands of homes and businesses were still without power in Nova Scotia on Thursday afternoon after widespread rain and wind overnight. As of p. AT, about 12, Nova Scotia Power customers were without electricity, according to the utility's outage map. Sean Borden, Nova Scotia Power's storm lead, said the central and northeastern regions of the province were hit the hardest. The utility said workers were out restoring power across the province. Electricity was expected to be restored for most customers by Thursday evening, said Borden. The Halifax area saw millimetres of rain. Borden warned that post-tropical storm Fiona weakened or damaged thousands of trees that could pose a threat.

When a storm happens, our crews do everything they can to repair damage and get the lights back on for customers. We stand our crews down when the wind reaches over 80 km an hour. Safety is our top priority and sometimes that can mean waiting until the wind slows down so we can safely start our restoration work. When this happens, crews focus on assessing damage and restoring power from the ground when possible. Damage can be more severe than expected. The estimated restoration time on our outage map is based on a few different considerations—weather conditions, location of the outage, past outages in the area, and more. Once our crews arrive on site and assess the damage, they sometimes identify other factors that could impact the restoration time. Things like an unplowed road, unsafe conditions, or more damage than anticipated might mean it will take more time than expected to restore your power.
