This national evening paper published in Amsterdam was the outcome of a merger in between the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant est, nrc handelsblad. It is liberal by tradition, rigorous by choice, and well informed across the board.

It is generally accepted as a newspaper of record in the Netherlands. On 7 March , the paper changed its format from broadsheet to tabloid.
