NHK Web Easy News is really useful for those still learning Japanese as it addresses one of the hardest parts of learning Japanese — the multiple readings for kanji Chinese characters — by providing furigana readings using the hiragana phonetic script on all the kanji. It also tends to use quite straight forward grammar. The result, as is implied by the name of the service, is an easy-to-understand article. On many days there are only a couple of stories, but generally these will be among the key news stories of the day. Knowing that some of my students are using the service is one of the main reasons why I have signed up to updates as it means I can keep an eye on what stories students should be aware of. The other two articles are related to the Noto Peninsular Earthquake. I have not written much about this event yet — largely as I could not think of anything useful to contribute on it.

Even if you only know the kana, you can attempt to read the articles aloud purely aiming to test kana recognition and pronunciation and then test yourself against the recording. You could even skip over the grammar for the time being and use the articles to find new vocabulary. Even if you can't understand the entire article, you can still make use of it. And of course, there is the added benefit of learning from the article content.
