Gems with effects, the way I see it, is no different than enchants and crafted gear effects and it adds depth to the game and experimentation. The difference is they haven't designed the entire expansion around this. Getting mad at this brand of borrowed power is akin to getting mad that you can't keep a piece of gear that has a cool and unique effect when a new expansion rolls around, which is to say, dumb.
