I think its presence as the best-known singleplayer sports RPG, coupled with the focus 2K places on it in terms of creating and selling their game, make it interesting enough to warrant this focus. Alone among major sports games, it allowed fans to enjoy a sweeping singleplayer story that played out through games of basketball, as you guided a young kid from college basketball all the way through an NBA career. The manner in which this is presented, and the extent to which previous systems and options have been pared back to accommodate it haircuts have moved from part of character creation to a paid wardrobe item, and a lower difficulty setting has been removed , are extraordinary. You could walk through it and have a little shootaround, but for the most part you made all your decisions—and bought all your upgrades and customisation items—through menus. What they built was PlayStation Home. Want to pay for a haircut?

NBA 2K18 is a hardcore sports simulation. If you want to get good, you have to put in the work. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to improve your skills no matter how you want to play. And the fact that there's so much to do is a bonus, because on the court, NBA 2K18 is also an amazingly well-crafted experience. The first thing that strikes you is how it looks and feels like a real-life professional basketball game. The 2K series' attention to detail has always been incredible, and this year is the best yet. Using the default camera, it's almost hard to discern between the game and an actual NBA broadcast. NBA 2K18 is also on Nintendo's less powerful Switch, but don't discount that version: it still looks great for what it is, even if it falls short of its bigger brothers. Of course, there's the added bonus of playing in portable mode, which also helps diminish graphical flaws given the Switch's small screen. Movement is handled with the left stick, and the right stick controls things like shooting, where you finish your lay-ups, and ball handling. Alternatively, buttons can also be used to pass and shoot, so if you don't like shooting with the stick, you don't have to. But the stick controls are satisfying, especially when you cross over your defender and drive to the hoop for a layup. You feel like the ball is completely in your control.

But getting there requires an enormous amount of work--unless you're willing to pay, of course.

The biggest downside right now to the head-to-head games online is that timeouts are causing a minor frame rate issue for many folks including myself after returning to action. If neither team ever calls a timeout, this issue never occurs. You can play through it, but it is noticeable, especially when stat overlays come up on the screen during the action. I imagine it will be patched because something similar has happened before in an NBA 2K game and was quickly patched then, but as of now, it remains my biggest issue with online play. Those are all steps forward, but NBA 2K18 has also taken a significant step back by bringing microtransactions to a place that feels uncomfortable. In another instance, your owner demands you trade for a specific player.

Critic Consensus. Extensive Microtransactions. Delivering another standout game of Basketball, NBA 2K18 is a pristine simulator that improves on its predecessors. There's plenty of pushback on the game's creeping microtransactions, but playing with a buddy is still tons of fun. NBA 2K18 is another step forward on the court, improving on the series' already great gameplay.

There's a reason basketball fans around the world spent Friday calling in sick, leaving work early, and eating up download bandwidth: It was 2K Day. It's not exactly a national holiday, not yet, but it's getting there. For the uninitiated, 2K Day occurs each year when the latest edition of the preeminent basketball video game series, NBA 2K, is released. The game hinders itself by making every little choice a micro transaction. The mini-games in the gym are exceptionally un-fun. It's the difference between walking miles to work, or hiring an Uber. Use your keyboard! And for die hard NBA fans, this is a must buy. Initial Release Date: Sep 15, All Platforms. You can increase your earnings by having a great game, making baskets, sticking to your defensive assignment, and generally playing well. Anyway, if you love basketball video games like i have for many many years then you will not be disappointed. This year's big hook is the expanded MyCareer, the story-driven create-a-player mode with the new Neighborhood central hub. It's very robust, with freestyle and scrimmage options, and is super helpful in perfecting your game without having to rack up losses in one of the other modes.

NBA 2K18 is also on Nintendo's less powerful Switch, but don't discount that version: it still looks great for what it is, even if it falls short of its bigger brothers. We rank the highest-scoring new Nintendo Switch games released in It feels like the entire MyCareer mode this year has been built around two very bad ideas—the Neighbourhood and an over-reliance on microtransactions—and everything good about the series has been stuffed into wherever it could fit to justify them. Add My Review. Graphics are beautiful, gameplay is fantastic and the controls work fine. A lot of the new elements of the recent NBA collective bargaining agreement CBA have been added to various amounts of success.
