Numerous anime and manga publications have commented on Gaara's character. Multiple series called Naruto's fight against Gaara the high point of the entire series due to their similarities and Gaara's role in the aftermath as he attempts to redeem himself. Among the Naruto reader base, Gaara has been popular, placing high in several popularity polls and always making it to the top ten characters. Numerous pieces of merchandise have been released in Gaara's likeness, including plush dolls, key chains, and action figures. Naruto and he have a similar background: he was rejected by his peers and fellow villagers for being the host of One-Tailed beast, Shukaku, a situation that Kishimoto describes as "very much like Naruto's". Gaara's development from this state into a highly withdrawn, sadistic character was intended to induce sympathy for him from readers, as it was contrasted against Naruto's development into a cheerful troublemaker. Gaara's backstory became one of Kishimoto's favorite stories from Part I ; Kishimoto had to revise his illustrations in such chapters as he wanted readers to understand more of Gaara's mental state. As a result, he was given the name Gaara why he felt more suitable to the fact he always uses sand.

With nobody to connect to, Gaara grew up hating the world and looking out only for himself, giving his life meaning by killing anyone he came across. Rasa's third child, however, Gaara, was compatible with Shukaku. For that reason, Shukaku was sealed inside of Gaara by Chiyo before he was even born, when Gaara was still a fetus inside of his mother Karura 's womb. Gaara ended up being born prematurely and from the ordeals of childbirth, his mother, Karura, died. Before dying, Karura looked lovingly at Gaara's small form and vowed to always protect him. Gaara was raised in isolation during his early life, taught ninjutsu by his father and cared for by his maternal uncle, Yashamaru. When he was allowed to roam around the village, Gaara would try to connect with the villagers, being kind to them and offering them any assistance he could.

If there is one thing that Naruto cares about more than being Hokage one day, it is being a good friend. But, why is their friendship so important to the overall story in Naruto? Gaara possesses unique abilities as a result of being the host of the One-Tailed Shukaku. Gaara can control and manipulate sand, including the sand in his gourd, which he carries on his back. The sand can be transformed into various forms and even, including shuriken. Even unconsciously, the sand automatically protects Gaara from any perceived threats. It can create a protective cocoon around Gaara or can be used to crush opponents - such as in his Sand Coffin Sand Burial techniques.
