The World Championships were considered a Pro Tour from to , but were discontinued in When the World Championship was reintroduced in it was changed to a smaller scale non-Pro Tour event. From , they were again rebranded as Players Tour events, with twelve events to be held each year: three series per year, each consisting of three regional events Americas, Europe, and Asia—Pacific which serve as qualifiers for a single finals event for that series. However, due to the COVID pandemic , all in-person events scheduled to occur after 9 February were cancelled until further notice; a different set of MTG Arena tournaments were scheduled in their place. In particular, the season was reworked by cancelling the April finals event for Players Tour Series 1, and replacing the three regional events of Players Tour Series 2 with four online events dubbed Players Tour Online, followed by a single online event in August that served as the finals for both Series 1 and Series 2. The Mythic Invitationals planned for May and July to coincide with the releases of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and Core , respectively were also replaced by a single Mythic Invitational in September. The ongoing —21 season will focus on three split seasons , each centered around a set release. Each split is slated to comprise three Qualifier Weekends on MTG Arena which serve as one method of qualifying for that split's finals event, called a Championship. All events are currently scheduled for online play via MTG Arena, though Wizards of the Coast has stated that they intend to add in-person qualifiers and adjust the seasons' formats if and when it becomes safe to do so. Invitations are usually earned by winning a qualifier tournament. Introduced in , Mythic Championships were a rebranded form of the Pro Tour. The name change came about after the introduction of a full Magic esports and competitive gaming program with the addition of MTG Arena and the Magic Pro League. It was meant to reinforce the idea that competitive Magic was both digital and tabletop going forward, and to make a clear distinction between the professional players in the Magic Pro League and the events that were open to the public. That money would be split equally between paper Magic and Magic Arena tournaments. In the end, Mythic Championships were only featured in numbered I to VII: 4 tabletop, 3 digital , after which they were replaced with the Players Tour for tabletop play and the Mythic Invitational for Magic Arena. These matches would lead into the Mythic Championships, where they would compete against other top players. Challengers were players who were dedicated to competing at the highest levels, but not in the Magic Pro League. In May , Wizards of the Coast announced that changes had been made to the selection process. An additional 16 players were to be invited to the Arena Mythic Championships from 52 to 68 at Wizards' discretion - in chief, these invites go towards greater representation at higher levels of competitive play. In practice, the diversity invites made up eight to ten slots of the sixteen for the Arena Mythic Championships - the remaining were allocated to Hall of Famers and other established names otherwise not qualified.
