Snufkin original Swedish : Snusmumrik [ en ] or Mumrik [ en ] , Finnish : Nuuskamuikkunen is a character in the Moomin series of books written by Swedish-speaking Finn Tove Jansson , appearing in six of the nine books; his first appearance is in the second book, Comet in Moominland. Snufkin wears old green clothes and a wide-brimmed hat that he has had since birth. He lives in a tent, smokes a pipe and plays the harmonica. Snufkin also has a great dislike for authority figures such as the Park Keeper and the many regulation signs and fences he erects. At one point, he sabotages the Park Keeper by planting Hattifatteners in his garden, causing them to grow and drive him out. He has a great hatred for all symbols of private property , even losing his temper with the Hemulen after the latter attempts to put up a sign declaring "Moominvalley".

Snufkin is a philosopher and a wanderer who enjoys the simple things in life — fishing, playing his harmonica and walking alone at night. A free spirit with no interest in owning things, Snufkin enjoys challenging authority figures such as park keepers. He greatly values his independence, but returns to Moominvalley every spring to spend time with his good friend Moomintroll. Snufkin is widely admired for his quiet confidence and self-belief, especially by the smaller and more timid residents of Moominvalley. Although others often see him as a rather solitary type, Snufkin can always be relied upon to help others in a fix. He even once became a temporary foster parent to twenty-four lost little woodies. Freedom is the most important thing in the world to him, but he cares about the needs of others and takes his responsibilities seriously. He knows that Moomintroll misses him terribly when he goes away, so he always leaves a reassuring letter promising to be back on the first warm day of spring. He pitches it near the Moominhouse all through the summer. Entrance is strictly by invitation only, but often very much hoped for — many creatures are drawn to Snufkin because of his enigmatic but kind nature.

Moominmamma is both high-minded and open-minded, a rare combination. She understands the value of learning through mistakes, a principle she applies to her own family. Never pushy, she will, invariably, win the day. It just might take a bit of time for others to come round to her way of thinking. Though unquestionably loyal to his family, Moominpappa can behave irresponsibly, selfishly, even, especially when led astray by dubious acquaintances and fine old whisky, or, quite simply, when the mood takes him. A dreamer and an irrepressible spinner of yarns, Moominpappa fancies himself a great adventurer. Not a little vain and often carried away by romantic fantasies, Snorkmaiden is kept grounded by Moomin, when she allows it, that is.
