It opened on October 16, , as the North York Performing Arts Centre and was designed by Canadian architect Eberhard Zeidler for musicals, theatre productions and other performing arts. At opening, North York awarded management of the centre to Livent , which sold the naming rights in to Ford Motor Company of Canada. It became the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts. Later, it debranded as the Toronto Centre for the Arts. The building originally housed three theatres: the Main Stage Theatre with 1, seats, the George Weston Recital Hall with 1, seats, and the multi-purpose, seat Studio Theatre. When Livent declared bankruptcy in , the City of Toronto government assumed control of the facility. After Dancap ceased operation, the centre had difficulty finding enough tenants for the Main Stage, and began a series of renovations from to that divided the Main Stage into two smaller theatres.

It houses four theatres. Along with annual series by several Toronto orchestras, the Centr e has presented countless individual performers and Broadway musicals and is home to the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company. The George Weston Recital Hall is the largest theatre in the complex, with capacity for The audience is seated on two levels: the Orchestra and the Dress Circle, which wraps around the stage. Wheelchair seating is available on both levels. I had a very good view from this seat. It was comfortable with good legroom and the theatre itself is nice with good acoustics. We sat in a row around the middle of the orchestra and had a perfect view. The sound was great. It has comfortable seats and the acoustics are fantastic. I enjoyed having an individual detached seat on the side of the Dress Circle.
