Australian conwoman Melissa Caddick vanished before she was infamous. Instead, in November , when many Australians had spent much of the past year in Covid lockdown, Caddick disappeared. A new sheen of cunning was instantly applied to her crimes: not only had Caddick managed to con dozens of people out of millions of dollars, but she had escaped before she was caught. And she had not fled with her ill-gotten gains to a bolt-hole on a tropical beach: three months after disappearing, her foot washed ashore on the New South Wales south coast. As the NSW deputy state coroner, Elizabeth Ryan, said in her inquest findings handed down on Thursday, how and when Caddick died remains unclear. Melissa Caddick was a wife, mother, daughter and sister. For their sake I wish that this inquest could have provided the sense of peace that can come with answers about what has happened to a loved one. The finding that Caddick has died may not persuade some of her victims, who believe she amputated her own foot to evade authorities, like a fox gnawing through its leg to escape a rabbit trap. Ryan noted police made comprehensive inquiries into whether Caddick was alive, but that perhaps the most persuasive evidence was that she had not made any contact with her son. So how did Caddick die? Ryan considered scenarios including murder, misadventure and suicide. She said this was despite evidence from oceanographers finding that it was possible for her to have done so and her foot to have been discovered hundreds of kilometres south about three months later. Ryan said that more evidence about what had happened to Caddick may have been available if NSW police had investigated the case differently, including by referring the disappearance to the homicide squad earlier, and moving more swiftly to gather CCTV footage.

He said: 'Ms Caddick built up a sizeable and loyal client base, and befitting of a successful businesswoman were the trappings of wealth, real estate in Sydney's eastern suburbs, luxury motor vehicles, designer clothing melissa caddick jewellery.

The November disappearance of Melissa Caddick has long left detectives mystified, with the seemingly successful businesswoman leaving behind a shocking secret. At am on the morning of November 12, , Melissa Caddick's year-old son heard her leave the family home, and assumed she'd headed out on her usual morning run around the wealthy eastern Sydney suburb of Dover Heights. As explored in ITV documentary The Real Vanishing Act: Missing Millionairess, the year-old financial advisor, who had gone out without her wallet or keys, was never seen again, and to this day it's unclear exactly what happened to her. What is known however is that, in the days before she vanished, authorities raided Caddick's home as part of a fraud investigation. It was alleged that Caddick had used a friend's license to falsely pose as a financial adviser, with her scheme granting access to funds from more than 60 clients, a list that included friends and even members of her own family.

The New South Wales deputy state coroner Elizabeth Ryan has concluded that the fraudster Melissa Caddick is dead while savaging the credibility of her husband, finding he withheld information from police. But the court but has been unable to make any definitive findings about her fate, saying suicide was a possibility. In Caddick, then 49, disappeared from her home in the Sydney suburb of Dover Heights after a raid on her property by officers from the corporate regulator and federal police on 11 November that year. Caddick was accused of falsely posing as a financial adviser and pretending to have placed the money into investments using fake CommSec portfolios and falsified trading documents showing profits. She instead used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle. About three months after her disappearance, a foot was found on a beach on the NSW far south coast. The foot was connected by DNA analysis to Caddick. Ryan concluded that Caddick is deceased. She said, among other things, Caddick would have contacted her son, whom she loved dearly, since her disappearance. The financial and emotional harm they have suffered will continue to reverberate for many years to come.

Det Insp Glen Browne said concerns the alleged fraudster had taken her own life were not given as much weight early in the investigation. Before she became one of the most intriguing and notorious missing persons in Australian history, Melissa Caddick was just one of dozens of people who go missing each day. Det Insp Glen Browne was manager of the NSW missing persons registry when Caddick vanished, and is now coordinating investigations for the homicide squad. He told the inquiry on Monday the registry dealt with between 30 and 35 fresh reports every day. On Friday 13 November , two days after her home was raided by corporate watchdog Asic and Australian federal police officers, Caddick was reported missing by her husband, Anthony Kolletti.
