Hemalurgy was different in the era of the final empire, and you just can't have as many spikes now as Marsh does. Sazed, meanwhile, has a problem. He has more ruin in his system than he does preservation, and it's making things difficult for him. Perhaps one way to solve this issue is to shunt that extra ruin into an avatar, a minishard. And who better to make an avatar of Ruin than the person already most heavily aligned with him? Ruin is the end of all things. The fall of the great civilization, the mountain ground into dust, the star that goes out.

Marsh is a half- skaa bronze Misting aka a Seeker from the Final Empire on Scadrial , and an Inquisitor that carries out the will of Harmony. He is seen as the personification of death throughout Elendel Basin , and eventually even on other planets, such as Lumar. Before becoming an Inquisitor , Marsh is stern and determined, earning him the name " Ironeyes " as a result of his piercing gaze. He is over six feet tall. At least during his dying state in PC, he is said to look thin and skeletal, with ghostly skin and an ill complexion.

Vin is a street urchin, who was saved by her brother Reen from her mother, who killed her baby sister at the same time she pierced Vin's ear, and gave her an earring. She lived with Reen for a while, while he taught her how to survive on the streets. She eventually winds up in Camon's crew. Camon is a criminal gang leader, who uses Vin for her Allomantic abilities. She is then taken into a group of thieves led by Kelsier. The band of thieves are promised the cache of the Lord Ruler's atium , an Allomantic metal that allows Allomancers to see a few seconds into the future, as reward for their contributions.
