The quality of the mard geer in Fairy Tail tended to be a bit of a roller coaster past a certain point, mard geer, and the Tartaros arc delivered in ways the battle against Alvarez didn't. There was more of a sense of danger to it, and delving into them as demons helped further build the world of Fiore, as well as lead to a few cool transformations. A big reason why the arc worked so well was Mard Geer, the end boss of it.

Mard geer Demon tells them that he is going to use his greatest Curse on them: Memento Mori ; the very attack he planned to defeat Zeref with.
