Alexander Gleason created and patented this map to show how longitude and time could be calculated by tracing an indicator around the globe. Essentially, this map uses a polar azimuthal projection, centering the North Pole and flattening the globe outwards around the edges. But this map wasn't just a handy device for time measurement or a way of showing off a novel projection. For Gleason, it supported his belief that the globe theory of a round earth was false. In this book, Is the Bible from Heaven? Is The Earth a Globe?

Richard Gott. I usually work on general relativity and cosmology. I have always loved geometrical things. As a kid I was fascinated by map projections. Since becoming an emeritus professor at Princeton, I have fondly returned to some of my childhood interests. No flat map of the Earth can be perfect. But flat maps are easy to store and manufacture and are therefore desirable. Previously, Goldberg and I identified six critical error types a flat map can have: local shapes, areas, distances, flexion bending , skewness lopsidedness and boundary cuts. These are illustrated by the famous Mercator projection , the base template for Google maps. It has perfect local shapes but is bad at depicting areas. Greenland appears as large as South America even though it covers only one seventh the area on the globe. A pilot flying a great circle route straight from New York to Tokyo passes over northern Alaska. His route looks bent on a Mercator map—a flexion error.
After all, their ideas are all generally based on fallacies and misunderstanding of science. That spreadeth abroad the earth by myself.
This Map is the Bible Map of the World. Copyright by Orlando Ferguson, These men are flying on the globe at a rate of 65, miles per hour around the sun, and 1, miles per hour around the center of the earth in their minds. Think of that speed! And his hands were steady until the going down of the sun—Ex. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed.
This article was originally published on Nov. The standard classroom maps we all learned geography from are based on the Mercator projection, a 16th century rendering that preserved lines used for navigation while hideously distorting the true sizes of continents and oceans further from the equator. The result is a widespread misconception that Greenland is as big as Africa, Siberia and Canada are disproportionately massive, and that Antarctica apparently just goes on forever. In reality though, Africa is larger than all of North America, and the Antarctic is about as big as Australia. But the AuthaGraph may be the pinnacle of accuracy. For centuries, cartographers have made numerous attempts to account for the inconsistency while trying to recreate the most accurate map of the Earth. Maps are compromises between distorting the angles of latitude and longitude lines and the relative areas of the continents and oceans. Some were made for specific purposes, while others just tried to find the cartographic sweet spot.

Earth is a sphere, so how can it be accurately portrayed on a 2D map? Simply flatten Earth into two pancakes, one depicting the Northern Hemisphere and the other the Southern, with the equator running around the edge, a new study finds. These two "pancakes" represent the most accurate flat map of Earth ever made, the study researchers said. Unlike other flat maps, the new circular map doesn't downsize or supersize the area of certain oceans or landmasses — for instance, many 2D maps depict Greenland as about the same size as Africa, when in fact Africa is 14 times larger, Scientific American reported. Plus, unlike some retangular maps that are very large, "this is a map you can hold in your hand," study lead researcher J.

Woe to the rebellious children, sayeth the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me. Think of that speed! Ethics Interview Cosmic code of conduct: the ethics of human testing in space. McIntyre adds that the flat-Earthers he interacted with each believed a selection of conspiracy theories, including that governments control the weather and that chem-trails from aeroplanes consist of chemical or biological agents. This object also tells an interesting modern tale about the role of institutions in constructing the truth. That spreadeth abroad the earth by myself. Flat Earth is an archaic and scientifically disproven conception of the Earth's shape as a plane or disk.
Wikimedia Commons featured picture Engels. Physicists will find it shocking, but there are plenty of people around the world who genuinely believe the Earth is flat. My hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth. Our maps can be cut out of, or inserted loose-leaf into, a magazine. That spreadeth abroad the earth by myself. Indeed, as Slegr points out, getting physics students to explain the evidence for a spherical spinning Earth is a great critical-thinking exercise. After an extensive and dedicated process, the moment has finally arrived to share this special creation with you. Everyday science Blog Physics sing-along is coming to Minneapolis, tiny fish creates very loud sounds. The effect also explains why a far-off ship can be seen even though it might have dipped below the horizon. Our map is actually more like the globe in this respect than other flat maps. Die ganze Erde steht still. Distances between cities are measured by simply stretching a string between them; if they are in opposite hemispheres, the string simply stretches across the equator at the edge of the map. But this map wasn't just a handy device for time measurement or a way of showing off a novel projection. When that occurs in science, one often needs a breakthrough, some out-of-the-box thinking, to make any radical progress. Oddly, Landrum says that many flat-Earthers may distrust scientists, but they are not against the scientific method.
