Rather than the usual parade of disillusioned former members looking back at the wreckage, the subjects of the series are very much in the thick of it. Director Hannah Olson connected with the members of a group called Love Has Won just a few weeks after the death of their leader, Amy Carlson, a woman who declared herself to be God. Through interviews with her devotees, snippets pulled from the thousands of hours of Love Has Won YouTube videos and live streams, police body camera footage and more, Olson paints a searing and unsettling portrait of a particular slice of American life. What drew me in was that it was a cult story that also felt like a whodunit. What we usually see with cult stories is one charismatic male leader gathering followers, and then the cult implodes because of one of the vices of that male leader—usually sex, money, or power. And the images of Amy Carlson that were published after her death haunted me. I genuinely wondered how that fate could befall someone. How could she possibly go from being a mother of three kids and a McDonald's manager to being a mummified cult leader? I spoke to a new age scholar at UT Austin. I was interested in how the Internet was contributing to the breakdown of consensus reality, politically, and in how it was happening in smaller microcosms. The questions I was asking about the relationship between class and the Internet and reality led me to this organization.

It's been nearly four months since Montgomery County police killed year-old Duncan Lemp during a nighttime raid on his house in Potomac, Maryland, but the Montgomery County Police Department has still not released body camera footage from the incident, despite calls from civil liberties groups and Lemp's family. Lawyers for Lemp's family claim he was shot while he was lying in bed during a March 12 no-knock raid by a Montgomery County Police Department SWAT team, who threw flashbangs into his room and fired on him through his bedroom window. The MCPD says it received a tip that Lemp was in illegal possession of firearms, which he was allegedly barred from owning due to a juvenile offense. Additionally, the department says Lemp had designed a booby trap on his bedroom door to detonate a shotgun shell in the direction of anyone entering his room. There's one way to possibly clear up these two conflicting narratives: Release the body camera footage from the fatal raid. But the MCPD has steadfastly refused to do so.

Carlson is described as a self-proclaimed spiritual savior who built a cult through her online manifestos and live-streaming sessions. Love Has Won has been described as a cult by former members. According to her estranged son Cole Carlson , she left him when he was 10 years old to become the leader of Love Has Won. Carlson would produce daily videos talking about her spiritual journey. In turn, she was called God by her followers. In May , seven people were arrested after a mummified body was found in Saguache County. When officers searched the residence, the mummified remains were found in a back bedroom, lying on a bed wrapped in what appeared to be a sleeping bag. What appears to be glitter-type makeup was found around the eyes of the woman. The body was decorated with Christmas tree lights and appeared to be set up in some type of shrine, the warrant said.
