The year of is coming to a close, and it's one that will live in infamy for our remaining years. For a lot of us, anything that happened before the stay-at-home orders were issued in response to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic seems like a completely different lifetime, nevermind events that transpired in this very year. In the pre-lockdown era, we got Ordinary Man , the first new album from Ozzy Osbourne in a decade. Meanwhile, Poppy foreshadowed a surge in rock's penetration of pop music as she did the inverse and transitioned away from futuristic bubblegum pop and into genre-warping metal territory with I Disagree. Then came a jarring disruption to every day life, prompting a sort of holding pattern as bands kept their eyes on the growing pandemic. Some artists held their new releases indefinitely, while others delayed their records either as a result of supply chain issues pertaining to distribution or just preferring to wait out the situation a bit longer. When it became apparent we'd be resigned to living amid the pandemic as best and safely as possible, a stream of releases poured out, rewarding fans who need new music now more than ever.

Metal is just about the only thing that got us through the otherwise dreadful year of It's a year we'd all like to forget and leave behind, but there are still some positive takeaways — at least when it comes to these 66 Best Metal Songs of Amid all the uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, bands did their best to navigate an extremely difficult situation. Some releases were put on hold as record labels crossed their fingers, awaiting a more tenable climate under which to put out new music — namely, the ability to tour behind a new record. As we optimistically look toward summer of for that long-awaited return of in-person concerts, we can't stress enough how thankful we are that so many metal bands elected to still release new albums and new songs, despite all of this. While won't be a year any of us look back on with fond memories, one thing that will cast the year in a positive light is the strength of the new music that was released and, in turn, the strength it gave all of us to push onward. It's a brand new decade and , aside from current events, has thoroughly killed it as far as new metal albums go. Never before has metal been so complete, spanning 50 years of artistry while newer acts look toward the future, which seems to be headed down a path devoid of genre barriers as evidenced by our list of 's Best Metal Albums So Far. Ozzy Osbourne represents the eldest side of metal's history as one of the longest-enduring artists of all time. It has touchstones of his storied past, but largely feels very in the moment and cognizant of current trends. If that's not a resounding endorsement of modern affairs, we give up. On the theme of tearing down the genre walls that divided music fans of all sorts for far too long are records from Poppy , Code Orange and Igorrr in particular, who embrace ideas far outside of metal's traditional scope. It's a continued exercise in experimentation as, over half a century later, there's still more to learn about metal's malleable state.
Here are the most anticipated rock and metal albums of , taking a look at ones arriving early in the year as well as bands who are known to be working on new material for an impending release. Seether have enjoyed their breather, but it's almost time to get back to work. Drummer John Humphrey laid out a bit of the timeline for the band's next album while speaking with T95 The Rock Station , and it looks like a release is likely. We've done a couple of shows, and we'll go in at the end of summer and early fall and track a new album, work on a new album," explained the drummer.
