But, he is, in fact, different. In body and consciousness, it is the same Link, but when Link first started his journey, he was a happy little guy with not a care in the world except that he had a bit of a disagreement with Ganondorf.
Link is known as the legendary Hylian hero called the Hero of Time, but really, he's a mostly normal, good-hearted, fun-loving 11 year old kid. Or, well Although OoT is far more classic and well-loved a game than MM, after Amanda dropped OoT Link, she decided to do something different with him if she was going to bring him back. Thus, we get awesome mask-wearing ball of strength little Link. Amanda has a bad tl;dr habit concerning Zelda. To remedy this, please just refer to Ocarina of Time Wikipedia. When he awoke, he was back in the Lost Woods, before Ganondorf had began to pursue the Triforce.

Of all the numerous installments in Nintendo's enormously popular The Legend of Zelda franchise, one of the strangest and darkest of them all is 's Majora's Mask , originally released for the Nintendo Serving as the direct sequel to 's universally acclaimed Ocarina of Time , the game opens with the young Link riding Epona through the Lost Woods before being attacked by a Skull Kid wearing the sinister Majora's Mask. Pursuing the Skull Kid, Link is cursed by the miscreant's magic before acclimating to Termina, a land filled with familiar faces and three days away from being annihilated by a plunging moon. Beloved for its tone, story and depth, one popular fan theory posits that Link is actually dead for the majority of the game and his adventures in Termina are just an out-of-body experience before his soul passes to the afterlife. The theory suggests that Link was actually killed in his initial confrontation with the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods. Termina itself, from its dream-like sequences and constant sense of foreboding doom, is a type of purgatory for Link's soul, underscored by the cyclical nature of the gameplay as Link constantly relives the past three days while searching for a way to stop the moon from colliding with Termina. The idea of Termina being populated by familiar faces from Ocarina of Time 's Hyrule, albeit under completely different identities save for the Mask Salesman, could be part of Link's soul reconciling with the people that he met before his untimely demise. Similarly, as the moon rapidly approaches Termina, the rest of Termina's citizenry must confront with their own grief and mortality as extensions of Link's soul accepting his own death and passing on. Finally, to traverse Termina, Link takes on the identities of the recently deceased to transform into them, including the Zora guitarist Mikau and Goron warrior Darmani, which hints towards other ways for Link to accept his own death. Of course, there are several salient counterpoints to refute this theory. The element of the theory regarding familiar characters resurfacing in Termina doesn't account for entirely new characters like Kafei in Clock Town, the Deku Kingdom in Termina's Woodfall region or the Goron Elder encountered in the Snowhead region. Plus, if the familiar faces are indeed people that Link encountered in Hyrule in life, the omission of Princess Zelda , the Kokiri including Link's best friend, Saria and Impa are certainly suspect. The game itself also suggests that the events of the story occurred in some definitive capacity, closing just as it started. With Termina saved, Link is seen quietly riding back through the Lost Woods in Epona, resuming his search for Navi, who went missing at the end of Ocarina of Time. As Link rides away from Termina, a tree stump in the Lost Woods is seen with a drawing of the Skull Kid, Link, the two fairies Tael and Tatl and the four giants that stopped the moon's descent waving at the player.
Ganon's Tower. When the two combine, they form the Couple's Mask. This comes after scenes of Termina moving on after narrowly averting the apocalypse as they get to bask in the light of a brand new day.
For Link, the opposite is true. Instead of a doppelganger with a different name, Link can come across a Goron who shares his name. Link the Goron is a character that exists in both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask , but he keeps the same name across the games, which is unusual for Majora's Mask because Termina is filled with characters that have the same appearance as others met in Hyrule, just with different names. Like Zelda, Link is left without a true counterpart in Termina, even though plenty of alternative versions of Link are in other Zelda games. However, Link the Goron can make for a neat Easter egg for players who have come across him in Ocarina of Time.

Skull Kid promptly steals the Ocarina of Time, and when Link confronts him, in an action-packed sequence, Skull Kid jumps on Epona and attempts an escape. Also, before I continue, in this game, Link has further trained and honed his combat skills since his first adventure, and now does awesome somersaults when he jumps.
