When Lilo and Stitch was released in theaters in June , nobody could have expected it to be the unexpected hit Disney animation needed. After a successful run in the 90s known as the Disney Renaissance with films like Beauty and the Beast , Aladdin , and The Lion King, the animation studio hit a rough spot in the s. The studio had high-profile disappointments like The Emperor's New Groove , Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and the film following Lilo and Stitch , Treasure Planet, would be one of the biggest bombs in the studio's history. Created by Chris Sanders, this original concept with no relation to a popular fairy tale or story, as well as being a science fiction property, felt like an odd pick for a Disney animated film with all the pedigree that comes with it. Yet the story of an alien meant to be a weapon of mass destruction coming to Earth and finding a family with a young girl in Hawaii struck a chord with audiences. Stitch has become one of Disney's most marketable characters, and this little film launched a massive, sprawling multimedia franchise with a variety of spin-off films and television series.

In this series, Hawaiian girl Lilo Pelekai and her alien best friend and adopted "dog" Stitch adventure around the island of Kauai searching for, naming, and rehabilitating Stitch's predecessor "cousins", who are his creator Dr. Jumba Jookiba's other genetic experiments. Note that Stitch , Experiment , appears in every episode, so he is not included in the "Experiments mentioned" list. Stitch wins an oyster containing a hidden experiment pod at a restaurant crane game. When the pod gets wet, however, the ghostly experiment possesses Scrump the doll and causes all sorts of mischief. When Stitch is blamed, he must prove himself innocent by catching the experiment in the act.

Lilo tries to sabotage Mertle's new hairdo by letting loose a hair-eating experiment, but it backfires when Mertle's mum's hair is attacked instead. Experiment is cute, but he's also a stink bomb. Stitch is jealous and tries to get rid of him, but ends up retrieving him, because Lilo's so sad. Trick or treaters never visit Lilo's house because it's too isolated - until she encounters Experiment , who makes people's worst fears come true. Mertle is given a bracelet with an unactivated experiment attached. Lilo knows she must retrieve it, especially when she finds that it will create a black hole that could suck in the whole world.
