So I now keep the 2nd battery in a storage cupboard and swap them over every few months to ensure both batteries get a workout.

Unplugging the unit once fully charged can help extend the battery life but it is not required. No problems with this in more than two years of ownership. They automatically quit charging when fully charged. I do not unplug my charging station when batteries are fully charged. Frustrating its not working for these.
