Prefacing by saying I've never had a Lego train before; so I know very little about this area of Lego. I would like a steam engine with coaches; and as far as I know, Emerald Night is the only official Lego set like that. I have seen tons of amazing steam engine mocs, but haven't found any with free instructions that are similar to the Emerald Night. So EN it is, then. Since it's my first train, I should start smaller anyway. So, besides the actual PU system, what bricks do I need to buy to help the conversion process be smooth for example different motor, wheels, plates, etc? PU is far from superior, I've got both.

I think it is a phenomenal model and ranks up there in my book as one of the best trains LEGO has released. It was totally outside of what they have ever done before and it was a welcome sight along with the sleek color scheme. You could go on Ebay, Bricklink, or on the secondary market elsewhere to get another coach, but that gets pricey. So the benefit of LEGO bricks is the ability to build on your own. Should I buy all the pieces individually, and if so how much would that cost, or should I buy the set for the cheapest possible price from BrickLink or another website for LEGO? I think that this train is possibly the best LEGO train set that has ever been made, which is why I want this one in particular. I'd say you ought to purchase the individual pieces from BrickLink, simply because you can find the same pieces in alternate colours. Unfortunately, I'd say that colors like dark green and tan are exceedingly popular right now, and therefore much, much more expensive. Colors really don't matter that much.
