The game features Batman and his sidekick Robin fighting their most dangerous foes, who have all broken out of Arkham Asylum and split into three groups to wreak havoc across Gotham City. The story is split into three scenarios, each one seeing them confront groups lead by the Riddler, the Penguin and the Joker. In each scenario, the player controls Batman and Robin as they fight through hordes of goons and henchmen to reach and defeat each villain, foil their plans, and send them back to Arkham. After clearing each story, the player is able to play through it in the villains' perspective, controlling them and carrying out their individual plans up to before being stopped by the Dynamic Duo. The fifteen escapees separate into three teams, led by each of the three masterminds. Alerted by the situation, Batman and Robin are called by Comissioner Gordon to capture them and stop their goals. To achieve these, the group need to gather a Freeze Ray, Ivy's mutated vine seeds, a prototype laser gun and the key to the main vault. Whilst Riddler hides, Batman and Robin arrive and defeat the shapeshifter. Two-Face arrives and helps Riddler escape, though Batman places a tracker on their armored truck.

The game is similar to earlier Lego games developed by Traveller's Tales , such as Lego Star Wars series and Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures , in that it is both a game based on a licensed property, and has environments, objects, and creatures made out of Lego. However, Lego Batman is the first to have an original story. Using attack combinations in combat will multiply the amount of studs earned. Occasionally, players must assemble Lego objects to proceed further in the level, cross obstacles, or unlock new suits. New abilities introduced in this game include picking up and carrying enemies and walking on tightropes across buildings. Up to two players can play in co-operative mode , [6] except in the PSP version which does not feature this mode. There are thirty levels in the game divided into fifteen each for the heroes and the villains [8] as well as two secret levels, which sees the player exploring miniature versions of the Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum to collect studs.

The LEGO Batman adventures have been written to properly document both the heroes' and the villains' side of the story mode.
