Unlike most series within the Space Opera genre , this central conflict is presented with neither side being fully in the right. Both factions make some good points but suffer from notable flaws. The Galactic Empire's and the Free Planet Alliance's various strengths and flaws make it hard to determine what faction in Legend of the Galactic Heroes was right in the end. To help figure this out, this article will examine 5 points that prove each faction was right in their views. A point in the Free Planet Alliance's favor is that its method of selecting new leadership is through the democratic process. While the democratic process can be fraught with problems of its own, the selected leaders at least give off the appearance of being competent in their duties. Comparably, the Empire's method of selecting a ruler leads to instability. As the process of selecting a ruler by blood rather than deed does not guarantee competent rulers. In the case of the Empire, only a minority of the emperors were competent rulers. This method of succession also promoted violent internal conflicts within the Empire. The Imperials' authoritarian and centralized government does give it one advantage over the Alliance, being that it is better at conducting a century-long war than the Alliance. For example, the fact that Imperial society was already a martial one before the Alliance-Imperial War lead to the Empire having the upper hand for most of the war. The Imperial style of rulership also means that it could easily focus its economy towards expanding the military without being worried about a lack of material wealth leading to disgruntled voters. This strong control of production leads to the fact the Imperial fleets often outnumber the alliance. What prevented the Imperials from completely overwhelming the Alliance is the fact that the Alliance's military had better leadership due to better staffing practices.
