The Freelander was sold in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive versions. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'. After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque unibody structures, [2] and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation from dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car -like body, and — after 62 years — became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option as of After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the two-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in , and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in , the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years. When the board approved the Pathfinder project, it was codenamed CB40 after Canley Building 40, where the concept was initially developed. Remarkably, the new, compact Land Rover had become almost as long as the original Range Rover, that had been phased out just the year before, and even sported an inch 2. When BMW acquired Rover Group , they terminated the agreement, and instead funded production facilities at Solihull , making use of the Rover SD1 assembly hall which had been inactive in the early s, when Rover car production was moved to Cowley. In , Land Rover SA was awarded export contracts to supply 1, left-hand drive Defenders to Angola and more than 3, right-hand drive Freelanders and Defenders to Australia. The Mk1 Land Rover Freelander was an instant hit and went on to become the biggest-selling four-wheel-drive model in Europe, with over , units sold over its nine-year lifespan.

Other off road issues are limited ground clearance and poorer approach and departure angles. The D3 has better clearance and things are tucked up out the way so not to get damaged. To be honest I've been eyeing up some 16" MTs on modulars I only put my ATs on my standard 17s in August and they've plenty of life left as most of the times I've got stuck it's been due to lack of traction. I've been really impressed. Any help most appreciated. We had one as part of our local coast guard setup for a couple of years I think it was a freebie - sponsored by a local LR Dealer - it ws okay - but up on the cliff-top coast path in the wet on some of the chalky outcrops it was useless. While the Freelander 1 does not possess the off-road proficiency of its bigger relatives - the Defender or the Discovery , it still beats all other competitors in its class Today, the Land Rover Freelander 1 and Freelander 2 remain a popular Land Rover for both general classic car enthusiasts and drivers in general.
Muddy mods to a winch which would enable you to pull yourself out of areas the hippo bogs down on. Just had a look through Winu's posts and seen what he did with his diff. Only when they are nearly broke will they come to their senses and release another Freelander to save their fortunes. I can't help but look at ready-modded Disco 2s for sale and think that, with the money I would have to invest in make the FL just slightly more capable, I could just get a D2 and be done with it. So, on surfaces such as snow or wet grass, or maybe even sand a Freelander with TCS may be a superior off road vehicle over a Defender. However, as expected, it feels that I have already reached the 'ceiling' for what can be done to improve it. Search titles only. It may not display this or other websites correctly. But a well sorted FL1 will do pretty much everything a D2 will do, especially if the D2 doesn't have a locking centre diff.
