Lagavulin 16 review

Average score from 88 reviews and ratings The Lagavulin 16 is such a quintessential malt that everyone should have in their bar cabinet.

Updated: Jul 11, Time for another dram! Being aged 16 years, this single-malt whisky is one of the smokiest you can find from the Islay region. The Lagavulin isn't my usual go-to whisky, and, as I said before, I'm not very fond of smokey peated whiskies, but I received this for my birthday so I had to give it a try. Did the one who gifted me this super peaty whisky know this before buying it, or did she know how I generally feel about them?

Where can I start? Still, after over whiskies tasted, my absolute favorite dram. I could go on and on about the grandeur of Lagavulin 16 year old. It is the reason, why I started my whisky tasting hobby. Whisky has been one of my favorite drinks ever since I got my first taste of it. But after Lagavulin 16YO, I started a quest for finding something that can top it. Whisky the cheap ones was just a great and rough way to get drunk. Lagavulin showed me the grand side of whisky. It made me appreciate whisky the way it should be appreciated. This absolute royalty of single malt whiskies, the Lagavulin 16 year old, has been matured mostly in Ex-Bourbon American White Oak casks. Getting its final touch, when finished in Ex-Sherry European Oak casks. Same thing happened with my other passion, the movies, when I watched Trainspotting for the very first time. Movies had always interested me a bit but Trainspotting made me a movie freak.

The Lagavulin 16 has lots of deep and complex flavor, but I did not experience the sudden and sometimes unwelcome explosion of flavor that deadens my taste buds. Big cloves. I've lagavulin 16 review letting it sit for extended periods, but it hasn't helped.

In effect, it was more of a cautionary tale about scotch huberous than it was a review. This was a decade ago, and Lagavulin loomed collosal before my pubescent palate. But that was a decade ago, and now is now. Christine graced me with the lovely Christmas gift of a bottle of the big boy and I thought it was high time to do a proper tasting and see if the hype was worth it. It pours a rich caramel colour that looks positively syrupy in the glass. In actuality, once you get passed the pungency, Lagavulin 16 smells more like charcoal smoke than many Islays , with the peatiness a kind of secondary note.

Lagavulin 16 review

When it comes to Scotch whisky, few distilleries have a reputation as stellar as Lagavulin. From its origins in , this Islay single malt has long been revered for its smoky and peaty flavours. Amongst their core offerings are two of their most popular expressions. Lagavulin 8 and 16 year old. Lagavulin 8 was bold and refreshing. It danced on my palate with a peaty punch and a surprising lightness that captured the wild spirit of Islay. A symphony of smoky sweetness and citrusy hints unravelled in my mouth, leaving a warm finish that reminded me of crisp, ocean-kissed coastline. Lagavulin 16 on the other hand, painted a richer, deeper portrait.

While there can be no doubt that this is a classic single malt, the intensity of that caramel vanilla in the nose and on the palate leaves me wondering what an unpeated mature Lagavulin spirit would be like. Just after writing this review, I looked at the other reviews here: only 5 reviewers have given worse ratings than I did - but 2 of them say that they love it, and 67 have given higher ones. Round and enveloping, but not as rich and complex as I would expect. The finish is all tobacco and leather armchair, with bursts of peat here and there. I have also enjoyed it in the bitter cold of winter while watching some NFL Football. There is some vegetable matter in the background. Touch of icing sugar, maple syrup and charred dried wood. Lagavulin 16 was my first peated single malt. Maybe its just my bottle, but I've read that Laphroiag is apparently even smokier. To bring back the family theme it is an Uncle who will always give you some quality time but will not let you borrow his 2 year old, 3 series BMW.

The line-up of the tasting consisted of Dalwhinnie 15, Cragganomore 12, Talisker 10, and Lagavulin Talisker 10, Lagavulin 16, and Diageo are entities that elicit mixed feelings in me.

It is a very complex and mellow sweetness like over ripe plumbs or dates. My friend named Dan from Michigan and I were sitting there just after dusk when we saw red lights coming over the ridge to our north. I hope the DE works out for you. Revisiting where you once began is a bizarre experience. Same thing happened with my other passion, the movies, when I watched Trainspotting for the very first time. Nose Soft, sweet and slightly sherried smoke wafts daintily from the glass, far from the peat punch I expected. Taste is fantastic, more peat, aged oak, however, sweeter with notes of sherry or berries; though not sure if this is aged in sherry casks?? Worldly, experienced, sophisticated but a little slow now and not into late nights. I happen to be lucky enough to have gotten a few batches of the 12YO at a reasonable price, and the 8 is less diluted and less expensive. Now to be honest I am not a peat head.
