Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is in a funny place right now story-wise. Taking time off from following the adventures of Boruto, or his father Naruto , current hokage of Konoha, the series is taking a bit of a diversion. Kakashi and Guy Sensei are older fan favorite characters simply looking for a hot spring vacation. Surprisingly enough, the Dog God faction is lead by another Naruto favorite, Kiba, who has become at odds with his girlfriend, Tamaki, who is leading the Cat God faction.

Though she protested greatly about this, her father told her that this wasn't war but an internal village issue and as they were shinobi, their lives were brief and that she should live long enough to ensure that the next generation would come about that would inherit the Will of Fire. In the anime, because of Kurenai's natural talent for genjutsu , the Third Hokage tasked Kurenai with helping to train Yakumo Kurama , another talented genjutsu user who longed to be a ninja. Kurenai is a caring and brave woman. When Hinata tried to offer Naruto some medicine after his fight with Kiba , Kurenai convinced Naruto Uzumaki to take it because she knew of her student's infatuation with him. She is also portrayed as the "big sister type". The two appeared together in most of their scenes, and the other characters made it a point to note this fact on several occasions. When Kakashi Hatake found the two together at a dumpling shop, he asked if they were on a date, which made Kurenai blush and make up an excuse that she was running an errand only. When she learned of his death, she fell to her knees in tears and disbelief, and later laid flowers on his grave during his funeral.

During Kiba's fight with Naruto, she thought to herself that Naruto couldn't possibly beat Kiba, only to be surprised again and again as Naruto took everything Kiba threw at him and finally defeated her student.

Female characters don't often get the spotlight in the Naruto franchise. That's mainly because the title characters from both Naruto and Boruto are young boys who are working toward becoming shinobi. Despite that, many of the women of the shinobi world have some serious strength as well. The kunoichi in Boruto have very different skill sets, and though some of them haven't been at the forefront of the story, their skills are known by fans who've seen them in action as teens in Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. Someone like Temari has the best skills utilizing Wind Release, though most of her action in Boruto has been off screen. Hinata, as well, goes through a lot of training as a child, though she's not active in the field in Boruto. Still, those are a couple of Boruto characters who rank amongst the strongest kunoichi. Her name was chosen by Asuma in belief of protecting the future well-being of the children of the world. While growing up, she was watched over regularly by Shikamaru Nara, as it was his final promise to Mirai's late father. During which, Mirai became very close to Shikamaru. As a two-year-old toddler, Mirai was outgoing and friendly to her parents' students, showing a special liking to Shikamaru, hugging him upon seeing him and referring to him as her "Big Brother". She also had a penchant for giving others nicknames: calling Akamaru and Kiba a mixture of both their names for example. Later as a grown kunoichi, Mirai is cheerful, energetic and dutiful in carrying out any directive given to her. She also felt it was her duty to make both her father and Shikamaru Nara, her father's student, proud because of how both of them had faith in her, and was deeply honoured to have her father's chakra blades passed down to her. Both Naruto Uzumaki and Kakashi Hatake remarked that Mirai took her responsibilities too seriously, much like her father was when he was younger. She also began to have doubts about her duties as a shinobi during her mission to escort Kakashi and Might Guy because of how peaceful the world was, and disheartened at how neither Kakashi nor Guy seem to live up to their legendary statuses.
