Jumbo Records is the beating heart of independent music shops in Leeds. Since then it has gone through several transformations, in recent years it changed management after a forty year long ride with previous owners Hunter and Lornette Smith. Now, Jumbo is a melting pot of genre that prioritises quality, regardless of style or personal taste. As a beacon of culture in the north, Jumbo aims to cover as many different tastes and interests as possible. They are constantly bringing in new releases and re-issues across a vast span of genres and their back catalogue is a deep and bountiful treasure trove of good taste. With the move to their new premises in , Jumbo built a small stage for their regular in-store gigs and opened a cafe so that you can relax with a coffee whilst shopping.

Formed in by Hunter Smith, and developed by himself with Lornette and Trevor. Hunter and Lornette only retired last year, and Trevor is still with us. We've always been in Leeds, with reggae and soul playing a big part early on, followed by punk: and now we really sell pretty much across the board. Leeds has a brilliant music scene. It can't really be isolated into one specific sound - all genres seem to find a space in the city. The live music scene just goes from strength to strength, from the really DIY venues, through the Brudenell and Belgrave Music Hall and right up to the big concert halls. There's also a growing community of like minded independent businesses in the city. We don't. We sell blues, soul, indie, dance, reggae, electronic, country, jazz, world, nostalgia, soundtracks, punk, pop, rock, along with all the bits in between. We are noted for our vinyl selection, but our CDs racks are formidable!

Tell us a little bit about your store? The owners are Nick and Justinia, who took on the shop when Hunter and Lornette retired. The real joy in a festival is stumbling across someone you've not heard before though, or didn't think would work at a festival, but does. Rugby had a couple of other decent independent record shops, and in particular we used to get the indie, punk and post punk stuff from Convergence. First record would have been Slade or Gary Glitter, I should think, but it was 2-Tone that really got me into music when I was about Probably 'Deliverance'. The Musical Box Button.
