Johnson and Friends is an Australian kids show that aired in the 90's, about a pink plush elephant toy named Johnson, who belongs to a boy named Michael, and the various adventures he has in Michael's bedroom with his other toys, such as a concertina named McDuff and a toy truck named Diesel. Contains the following tropes: Amnesia Episode : "Diesel Who", where Diesel accidentally collides with a wall after trying to run over McDuff. The collision is hard enough that it leaves Diesel unable to remember who he is, or who any of his friends are, for the rest of the episode. Animate Inanimate Object : Alfred, a hot water bottle, technically isn't a toy but is still a recurring character. Balloonacy : The episode "The Birthday Balloon" is about the toys admiring some balloons Michael has brought home from a birthday party. Johnson ends up floating through the air while trying to grab them, and the others have to get him back down. Birthday Episode : "Birthday Party" is about Johnson's birthday. Blatant Lies : In the episode "Battle of the Bed", Alfred is on top of the bed and throws pillows at the toys just for a laugh. The series started out as an idea by Film Australia producer Ron Saunders, who stumbled upon footage of a puppetry troupe being edited for a documentary film in one of the edit suites, in the late s. The puppetry troupe featured a large scale truck puppet which gave Ron the idea of a scaled up puppetry series in which toys come to life. Ron teamed up with director Ian Munro to bring this idea to life, and after cycling through many writers, they found John Patterson - who impressed them immediately with his trial script.

All become great friends and are later joined by Victoria, the wise dinosaur, who lived down the hallway in Michael's sister Melissa's room. The series also generated a great amount of merchandise, which is considered to be quite collectible these days. Due to the fact that it was thought that American children's wouldn't understand or be able to relate to Australian accents, it was decided to dub the Johnson screen library with American accents. All fifty two episodes were sent over and packaged into The Fox Cubhouse, a preschool block specifically created to bring Johnson to the US, as American timeslot guidelines wouldn't allow a ten minute program, two Johnson episodes were screened during every Tuesday and Thursday episode of the Cubhouse. Shortly after this, Fox and WQED commissioned a further series of 26 episodes of Johnson, bringing the total episode count to seventy-eight. Series three and four were shot in New Zealand, in contrast to the first two being shot in Sydney, Australia.
