Jo is a hunter, the only child of Ellen and William Anthony Harvelle. She was born April 7, Her mother Ellen calls her "Joanna Beth. Her parents are both hunters who run Harvelle's Roadhouse in Nebraska, which acts as a base for hunters. Bill Harvelle is killed when Jo is '"still in pigtails" while on a hunt with John Winchester. After his death, her mother Ellen continues running the Roadhouse. Jo was 5'4" and slim. She had brown eyes and long wavy blonde hair which appeared to have darkened slightly between the second season and the fifth season. As a ghost in Defending Your Life, her skin was visibly paler than it'd been in life. She usually wore jeans combined with short-sleeved or sleeveless tops, such as a tank top in her first appearance or the T-shirts she wore in Abandon All Hope By the fifth season, she had started wearing a light green jacket while hunting. In Defending Your Life, she wore the outfit she'd died in: her green jacket over a gray shirt and jeans and boots.

Sam and Dean then leave, leaving Jo and Ellen to their grim-looking fates. Aside from their surrogate father, Bobby Singer Jim Jo harvellethe Winchesters didn't play nice with other hunters in the show's early seasonsbut Jo was always an exception.

John and Bill went on a hunt together that resulted in the latter's death and the former's estrangement from the Roadhouse crew. John avoided the Roadhouse out of guilt and never told his sons Dean or Sam about it, the Harvelles' existence, or Bill's death. Due to this Jo gets mad and yells at Dean and Sam and quotes "like father like son" she than leaves and doesn't return until season 5. Dean and Jo first met when Sam and Dean broke into the Roadhouse in " Everybody Loves a Clown " after tracing a voicemail Ellen left on their now deceased father's phone.

According to the show's creator, Eric Kripke, Jo was initially intended to be a love interest for Dean , but eventually became sort of a little sister figure for him. Jo appears sporadically throughout Season 2 , with additional appearances in both Season 5 and Season 7. First seen in the beginning of Season 2, Jo is someone who is heavily influenced by Sam ; and, in particular, Dean. Having purposefully been kept away from the supernatural lifestyle of the hunters by her very protective mother, Ellen, she is determined to follow the brothers on a mission, naively thinking that the excitement of the job is something to combat the potential emotional turmoil and death. Eventually she does manage to sneak off and follows Dean on a mission, much to his annoyance. However, she proves herself useful in the end helping the brothers to destroy the creature that is inhabiting a set of apartments.
