Keep your teams and stakeholders in sync with software designed to help you release more predictably, pivot with agility, and stay aligned to the big picture goals. Plans , an advanced planning feature in Jira Premium, allows you to expand your issue hierarchy above the epic level so work can be grouped under company-wide initiatives, such as programs or goals. The timeline , a project view available across all Jira editions, allows you to plan and track work up to the epic level. Plans provides pre-configured and custom views for planning and tracking work across multiple teams and projects. In the summary screen of a plan, you can oversee issue progress, key dependencies, team progress, and team capacity. The timeline view allows you to plan work and track dependencies for a single team and project. Map dependencies between teams, projects, and more to get ahead of blockers across your organization.

Plans enables teams of teams to plan and track cross-functional work, such as a program or initiative. Within a plan, you can schedule work, allocate capacity, map dependencies, and model different scenarios, all within a single source of truth. Plans pulls data from boards, projects, and filters in Jira to visualize work in a customizable interface. Functioning as a sandbox environment, you can plan and experiment before updating your original data in Jira. This guide explains the key concepts of advanced planning including how to create your first plan and best practices for a seamless planning experience. Advanced planning is available as part of Jira Premium and Jira Enterprise. It visualizes how each team contributes to broad organizational goals. The easiest way to get started with Plans is using our top-level planning template. The template comes with a plan, project, and issue hierarchy all pre-configured to help your teams manage large, cross-functional efforts, such as a program or initiative. Optionally, you can also create a sample plan. This generates a plan using dummy data so you can quickly get an idea of what a fully baked plan looks like and explore its capabilities in a risk-free way.

The timeline is a planning view available in all Jira Software plans that allows you to plan work, track progress, and map dependencies within a single team and project. Both team-managed and company-managed projects are supported in the timeline view. In Jira Software, epics represent large bodies of work that can be broken down into individual tasks. This work becomes a child issue of the epic, which is sometimes referred to as the parent issue. Issues are displayed as colored bars on the timeline. Child issues can be created directly in the timeline view and are nested within the epic they belong to. The most common child issues are stories, tasks, and bugs, but you can create new issue types to represent different pieces of work for your teams.
