She said India is a wonderful country, and that she cannot bring herself to hate it, despite her recent experience there. Megumiko, a spa manager from Osaka, said she was more traumatised by reactions to the incident than by what actually happened to her. Megumiko said she knew the risks she was taking when she set out on that day, as all of India was celebrating Holi. But she also acknowledged that she went there willingly. My original intent was to convey the positive and fun sides of India.
Mika Kobayashi was on her way home one day when men forced her into a van and raped her. She went public about the sexual assault eight years later, in , in a book that chronicled the incident, and the nightmare that followed. Dismayed by the police handling of the case, which she said made her feel like a criminal, Fisher took matters into her own hands by filing a lawsuit against the rapist and going public about what happened to her. These are two brave women who broke Japan's silence on rape. More recently, another woman, year-old Shiori Ito, did the same. Although Kobayashi, Fisher and Ito's experiences span 15 years, their stories are alarmingly similar. All three describe abusive police investigation techniques, failure to take sexual violence seriously, lack of support for victims, and at times, society's unwillingness to understand their pain.

In , Tarana Burke founded the Me Too movement to help sexual abuse survivors heal from their trauma and seek justice. Almost a decade later, metoo went viral, as victims across the globe came forward with their stories. After Kobayashi was kidnapped and raped by multiple men, she authored a book chronicling the incident and the mistreatment she endured from police officers. Fisher—who was raped by a US serviceman—also went public with her story, noting that the police made her feel like a criminal. She expressed that the police did not take her case seriously and employed abusive interrogation practices. One tactic stood out—investigators forced her to lie down on the floor and re-enact the assault. Beyond institutional failures, Ito noted the public backlash she received, something Kobayashi and Fisher also endured. All three received threats and nasty comments, an unsurprising reality for survivors who share their stories. Legal red tape further complicates reporting and silences survivors.
