Following the death of his father, Ivan set out for revenge on Tony Stark, as he blamed the Stark family for the humiliation that was brought upon his father. Ivan was the son of Anton Vanko, a Russian scientist who helped Howard Stark to develop the revolutionary arc reactor. Anton would later be accused of espionage by Howard and was therefore sent back to Russia, where he was subsequently imprisoned for selling plutonium to Pakistan. He spent 15 years in prison, and would eventually die a poor and humiliated man. Whilst Ivan himself was a talented physicist, the humiliation that the Stark family had brought upon his father haunted him. He would take care of his ill father in the final days of his life. Shortly after his father's death, Ivan started working on an armor suit that featured electrified whips and was powered by a miniaturized arc reactor, similar to the Iron Man suits. Six months later, Ivan would bring the suit to the Circuit de Monaco, where Tony Stark was participating in a race. Using a ticket provided by the Ten Rings, Vanko managed to enter the race track, where he revealed his Whiplash armor to Stark and the world. Whilst Ivan was successful in taking out Stark's car, Tony himself survived, and he managed to evade Vanko's subsequent attacks as well. Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts arrived at the scene not long after, and rammed Vanko against the concrete barrier with their car, temporarily knocking him out. Ivan soon regained consciousness, and retaliated by stripping the car of its doors using his whips. Meanwhile, Tony had suited up and was now able to take on Vanko in combat. A short fight ensued, with Tony eventually winning and disabling the Whiplash suit. Vanko was then taken to prison.

Vanko is given passports from a person whom appears to be associated to ten rings. Now with passage out of russia secured came time for his revenge. Ivan is wearing his exoskeleton harness with whips using electricity to cut and destroy stuff during the attack. Tony defeats Ivan thanks to help from Happy Hogan. While in jail Ivan is approached by Tony Stark and is asked why he didn't sell the technology he had created.
