In its most general definition, ethical concepts and issues are a branch of philosophy that deals with moral principles and guides our actions and decisions. The emergence and development of ethical attitudes and behaviors, an important concept that should be carefully considered in almost every health practice, dates back centuries. The emergence and development of ethical issues in psychiatry, one of the first areas of health practice to address ethical concepts and issues, began many years ago. Although there have been regressions or pauses from time to time in the development process, the development process of ethical concepts and issues in psychiatry has been realized rapidly. Ethics, which is a very important concept in psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, and care processes, has shown innovative changes with the advances in the field. The foundations of patient-centered care were laid with dynamic ethics, shaping and developing psychiatric nursing practice. Ethical issues, which have increased in importance and value in psychiatry, especially with their contribution to patient welfare, are among the most important factors in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of psychiatric patient care. Current psychiatric nursing practice is presented within the framework of ethical principles and rules. This book chapter aims to provide detailed and up-to-date information on ethics in psychiatry and psychiatric nursing, the history of ethical concepts and issues, the development and importance of ethical issues, and finally, the role and responsibilities of the nurse in the development of ethical concepts and issues.
