Is the only woman in the room on netflix

From the time Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born in November , anyone who saw her was impacted by her beauty. No one failed to notice her whenever she entered a room. She was adored by her father, a prosperous banker in Vienna, and given every opportunity he could afford including a private tutor beginning at age 4. Unlike many other parents at the time, her father encouraged her curiosity and desire to know how things worked. Their times together included him explaining to her the intricacies of various inventions without doubting her capacity to grasp the information. And it was perhaps this that led her mother to be more critical of her skills and slow to commend her for anything she did. Marie Benedict tells her story in The Only Woman in the Room and gives keen insight into this fascinating woman whose beauty would open many doors for her throughout her lifetime. It would be this beauty that attracts Fritz Mandl to her when she is still a teen after seeing her live acting performance on stage. His extravagant gifts of roses sent to her dressing room each night piqued her curiosity, but when he wanted to call on her and her father discovered who he was it became evident that this relationship was one she could not avoid and might be key to the safety of her entire family. Her beloved Austria saw the rise of the fascist move in Germany and feared it would succumb and lose freedom. Fritz was a major munitions manufacturer with powerful connections all over Europe. When asked for consent to marry his eighteen-year-old daughter by Mandl, 33, he gave his daughter a choice while also telling her it could provide safety for her and the family in the time ahead. When Mandl chose to be in control of every aspect of the wedding including choosing the gown she would wear and the guests to be invited, Hedwig was disappointed but kept silent at the urging of her father.

But the real Lemarr fought her entire life to be taken seriously, and here, she is not. Help center.

We're talking about the woman who in real life invented wifi and a WWII naval torpedo system. Add to it dull writing and a first person narrative with overblown phrasing that tells rather than shows and there were numerous times I wanted to fling this book against a wall. Hedy is able to use her powerful position to avoid Nazi persecution. At the same time, her husband is controlling and difficult, and one evening in , she disguises herself and flees. So blindly plunging into this story I was met with some nice surprises. I also knew that this beautiful actress was also the inventor of a radio guidance system that was eventually used in the development of Bluetooth and Wi-fi. The first part of the book is set in pre-WW2 Austria, where as an aspiring actress she is forced into marriage with a notorious arms dealer. Most Historical Fiction is designed to allow the author to create empathy and emotion for the person s of interest. This book was given to me by the publisher in return for an honest review. And yet, despite absolutely being one of the most interesting people to have lived in the past century, Lamarr is decidedly not a household name. Suzanne Toren does an excellent job narrating the book. She exudes perseverance and fortitude, and is a role model for us all.

Hedy Lamarr had the kind of life that, at first glance, sounds too dramatic, terrifying and glamorous to be real. Her biography reads like the plot of an old-fashioned noir movie — born in Austria in at the cusp of World War I, married to an arms dealer with Nazi ties at the age of 18, she defected from the Nazis, fled to America, became a Golden Era of Hollywood movie siren and invented a frequency-hopping signal system patented by the US Navy during World War II. And yet, despite absolutely being one of the most interesting people to have lived in the past century, Lamarr is decidedly not a household name.

Sure thing! Taking her secrets with her, Hedy devised a plan to escape her marriage and her homeland for a free future in America. Email Required Name Required Website. Hedy Kiesler is lucky. Review coming soon. I was very impressed by her innovative way of escaping him and making her way to another life. Thank you, Pamela, for these encouraging words. Sad that as she neared the end of her life, things went awry. Not only is Lamarr a stunning and well-loved actress hiding her Jewish heritage, she is also a brilliant scientist with an idea that may save her new country- that is, if anyone will take her seriously. The development of other characters was lacking leaving the total focus on Hedy who, as written by this author, comes across as unlikable. I'm also baffled as to why this is being published in January according to the back of my Book Expo ARC , because it's an obvious beach read -- and is written as such. I was aware that I was reading a fictionalized biography but I really enjoyed the read and couldn't put the book down. Desperate to escape her controlling husband and the rise of the Nazi party, Hedy disguises herself and flees from Austria to London in The prose holds her at a distance, and the result is a book chock full of war, sex, love, death, pain and glamour landing entirely flat on an emotional level.
